Pan Pacific vs. Wedgewood?
We are going to be in Vancouver for 5 days at the end of May and have narrowed our hotel choice down to either the Pan Pacific or the Wedgewood. At the Wedgewood, it would be a 1 BR suite. At the Pan Pacific, it would be a large corner room with an upgrade (if available). We like to see the city, have very good meals, do some walking tours, etc. Any suggestions re. deciding between these hotels?

I don't know about the Wedgewood, but I did stay at the Pan Pacific a few years back. It's right next to the cruise port and has a free trolly to Stanley Park. It's within walking distance to the Gaslight District (which is very touristy but with some cute shops) The hotel is beautiful; I stayed there for a 2 nite post visit after my Alaskan cruise. I ended up being stuck there for 6 days because I was to fly home on 9/11. The staff was friendly, accommodating, and really helped make the foreign visitors feel more comfortable.
The bathroom was marble with Aveda hair products (if you have a woman in your party, then she will probably appreciate that!) I liked that I wasn't in the direct heart of the city and on the water instead. The main shopping avenue is only a short cab ride away. You'll enjoy your stay, Vancouver is gorgeous with nice people. Hope this helps

Also, the Pan Pacific has a tour desk in the lobby for you to book your siteseeing. I took a tour to Vancouver Island to see Victoria & Buchart Gardens, and the bus picked me up right at the hotel. My room was a nice size with a king bed and great views of the city and the room service was excellent. I'd go back any day

I was going to stay out of this one, because every time somebody mentions the Wedgewood I get all dreamy-eyed and I go on at great length about what a wonderful hotel it is. But since you asked - for us, it would be the Wedgewood hands down. It's in a great location, the staff are attentive and capable, the rooms are lovely, and the restaurant is amazing. True, it doesn't have a view, but personally I don't spend a whole lot of time looking out of the window of my hotel room. They do have rooms with balconies overlooking Hornby Street, and it can be fun to people-watch, I suppose. I've stayed in a 1 BR suite there and it was beautifully appointed, spacious, and extremely pleasant.

thank you all for your responses. they were very useful - we decided on the Wedgewood and it was even nicer than everyone said. we loved the european botique feel. the staff was very friendly from the front desk to the restaurant manager. my wife loved the amenities and the wonderful tub. by the way, the turndown service left cookies each night - one chocolate and one sugar. i would definitely stay there again.

Hello - we just returned from Whistler and Vancouver trip. I'd highly recommend the Wedgewood Hotel to anyone staying in Vancouver - service was wonderful and the room was beautifully appointed (Frette linens and upscale toiletry products, beautiful tapestry on bed); the bathrooms were marble (again, Frette towels and robes - the Four Seasons in Whistler had the same linens and towels) and the adjustable Kohler showerpiece is terrific. The chocolates upon arrival is an especially nice touch. The famous cookies at turndown were a nice touch although a bit overrated. Request a view overlooking the Robson gardens if you do book there. The location was fantastic and central to everything. Staff was extremely gracious.
I'd also recommend Brix for dinner. We were treated really well and had a perfect table in the window. Very nice entrees list, selection of tapas and wines by the glass. Top notch service and terrific at serving appetizers / tapas style throughout the varous courses (sometimes wait staff is not so gracious because of the several trips to overall price of meal ratio).

Well, we chose the Wedgewood and were not disappointed. It was one of the nicest hotels we have stayed at in many a year. The staff was just wonderful, including the cleaning person who thought we should see some of the other rooms - so you took her time to show us ones that people had vacated. The tasting menu at the restaurant was superb and I loved the cookies at turndown (my waste did not like them as well, however). Great concierge service also. We will definitely stay there next time - and might go sooner than otherwise because we know that such a nice welcome and stay will be waiting for us. Thanks to all for directing us to the Wedgewood. P.S. We did stop at the Pan Pacific to see what it was like. It's strength appears to be its location by the water. With the large open space, it has a bit of a cold feeling. We were doubly glad we stayed at the Wedgewood.
