Paddling and hiking in the Canadian Rockies: What should we not miss?

Jump to last reply

We are an active, middle-aged couple planning a hiking/paddling trip to the Canadian Rockies. We hope to go in late August/early September. Our dates are flexible, and we're looking to take a trip of 10 days or so.

Coming up with an itinerary is proving challenging because there are so many beautiful lakes and rivers! Aside from the obvious (and no doubt busy) spots like Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and Bow River, what waterways should we consider? We'll be limited to places that offer canoe/kayak rentals. "Off the beaten path" is a definite plus. We'll be hiring a car for sure, and flying into Calgary.

We'd be grateful to hear suggestions from the Fodor's hive mind re: paddling spots, hikes, and lodgings. Where should we begin and end our visit? Are 10 days enough? Please help!

Many thanks. :-)
