Overnight parking in Montreal

Hello:

I'll be visiting Montreal via car, staying at the Hotel Intercontinental at the World Trade Centre, Thurs-Sun. My dilemna this: the hotel charges $19/day for self-parking in the garage, which is shared with the World Trade Center. According to the World Trade Centre website, daily parking rates at what I assume to be the same garage are $10 - $15. I will be leaving my car wherever I park until I depart. Since I'm packing light, I won't utilize valet. I'm wondering, in these situations where a hotel shares a parking lot with the general public or another entity, do you suggest telling the hotel that you'll be parking with them, (am I required to do so) or just park it and leave it off the books? I'm guessing since I'll be checking in late Thursday night, they'll charge me a full $19 for 1 hr of parking between 11 PM and midnight. Also, if anyone is familiar with this lot, or this area of Montreal, do you have any suggestions for this garage, or nearby cheap garages or lots (would rather not risk on-street parking)? Thanks for the help!

You do not have to use the hotel's service. When you drive up, just tell them you need to leave the car at the front for 10 minutes while you check in and then will be moving it(They don't need to know why--maybe you're just dropping someone off, helping them check in, and driving off...)
They may ask for your car keys just in case they have to move the car for other traffic--there is no driveway in the front of this hotel, just a regular street. Than after you check in (or, if there are 2 of you, one can do this right away) go park wherever you please.
I stayed at the Intercontinental twice a few years ago. Once I did just as you plan to do -- park in an adjacent lot. Once when I was there, there was major street construction going on, the only parking available was the hotel's valet service (they didn't allow individuals to use the lot). I actually hated that since it took nearly half an hour of waiting every time I wanted to use the car.
Haven't stayed there recently so I can't help with locations of nearby lots

I was recently in Montreal with a car; if the hotel you are staying at is the one in Old Montreal along Rue Bleury, then there is definitely parking around the area. I can offer you some info on two different places.

The first was a parking garage on Saint Maurice (if you're going south on Rue McGill, make a right onto Saint Maurice and the garage is on the right). I think it was $8.25/24 hours, and you can leave it there as long as you need. You have to leave your keys with the staff. It was convenient and a good price, but I didn't think it was safe. Multiple times when I went back to my car to get something, there were no employees to be seen, and they'd left my car keys in the ignition with all the doors unlocked. Maybe I'm too distrusting, but that setup just made me nervous. Although I did leave my car there for 2 days and it was perfectly fine.

I ended up moving the car to an outdoor lot a little farther south (Rue Bleury turns into Rue St. Pierre, and you make a right onto Place D'Youville - the lot is immediately on the left). It was $8/weekday (7 am to 5 or 6 pm, after which it is free for the night until 7 am the next day), $7/weekend (same hours, I think). The left side of the lot is for monthly parkers, the right is for the public. You pay an automated machine and display a ticket on your dash, but it's only good for the day. So you'd have to return each morning to get a new ticket. (There may be a way around this, but my French is minimal so I may not have completely understood all the instructions).

I was told these were two of the cheaper parking lots in the area; I am sure there are more lots around. I don't know if there's anything closer to your hotel, but neither lot I mentioned is that far of a walk (5 min, maybe). I hope this helps, even if it tells you where NOT to park.
