My husband and want to take a trip to Canada in August. We can only do 10 days and want to see as much as we can of the area while we're there. I've had a look for fly/drive holidays but I have prices things up and I can do it cheaper by doing it myself. I just wanted opinion on whether this sounds like a reasonable itinerary taking account distances between places/things to do in the area.
How does this sound?
Fly into Toronto, fly out of Montreal

3 nights in Toronto
Pick up car on last day in Toronto
2 nights in Niagara Falls
1 night in Kingston
2 nights in Ottawa
2 nights in Montreal
Return car on arrival in Montreal

Any suggestions/alterations welcome. Thanks in advance.

Niagara Falls is a day trip from Toronto.
Three nights in Ottawa would be a stretch.
I would add a night in Montreal and spend the extra day in the Easter Towships, doing the wine route, hiking, etc.

No, not really. Three nights in Toronto (I assume you are flying from Europe).

One night in Kingston (again, I assume there is something there that interests you)

Two nights in Ottawa.

Three nights in Montreal.

One floater.

Ok that sounds good. Will take a look at options. Yes we are flying from the UK and nothing we particular we wanted to see in Kingston, just thought it would break up the journey to Ottawa. Is that not a good idea? Can you recommend anywhere else instead?

I would recommend picking up the car at Toronto airport and driving right to Niagara Falls... Two days there seeing the sights and the Niagara on the Lake wine region followed by a return to Toronto for two nights... Then Ottawa, Consider adding Quebec City before returning to Montreal to conclude your trip... The flow of this itinerary gives you the best range for two to three days in each city...

I would recommend Prince Edward county between Toronto and Ottawa. Soe lovely villages, country roads, a beach in the provincial park.

We did consider Quenec but thought with only 10 days there would be too much time spent driving

And the problem with picking up the car from the airport and going straight to Niagara falls is that we'll then have to pay for parking in Toronto on our return

I like your original itinerary. I live in Toronto. Niagara Falls is approximately 90 minutes from Toronto. And, you don't need a car in Toronto--you can either walk or take public transit.
Kingston is a nice town--but not a lot to do there. It is approximately 3 hours drive from Toronto, on the way to either Ottawa or Montreal. I usually stay over in Kingston to also break up the drive.
Prince Edward County is nice--wine country, small towns and as mentioned, there is a nice provincial park called Sandbanks. Also a park called Presqu'il is nice for a stop. Maybe mapquest and see if it makes sense for you. There are nice bed and breakfasts particularly in a cute town called Picton. Not sure that this is what you want to see?? There is also wine country on the way to/from Niagara Falls. Do stop at Niagara on the Lake when going to the Falls.
Ottawa is beautiful and 2 days is more than enough time there. Enjoy!!!

In my opinion you would enjoy your trip better if you choose few places and see maximum, as there are lots to see in every place. In Montreal itself we have the Notre dam Basilica, the Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal Botanical Garden and many more. I believe if you spent quality time in seeing three places for 10 days your trip would be more exciting, adventurous and romantic. Just a suggestion Rhianapritchard….coz my family planned a trip to India for 15 days and we wanted to cover the whole country. It was so tiring and couldn't finish seeing any place completely. Being a canadian, I’m advising you to change your itinerary. If you have 5 nights at toronto I would suggest you to visit the Algonquin Park, ontario, which is just 2 hours 48 minute drive from toronto. The Algonquin Park is so huge we cannot completely see it in one day. They have so many activities there. Two years before I went for camping at the Park and stayed with my family at an adventure lodge in the Algonquin Park ( http://www.killarneylodge.com/algonquin-park/ ) and I would suggest you the same. You could arrange a pick up from the park to the Niagara Falls which is 3 hours and 36 minutes from the park. Spent a night there and go to Montreal the next morning which is 6 hours and 36 minutes. If you can avoid Niagara falls and choose Kingston or ottawa then you could be saving more time on the drive.

When in Ottawa, cross the bridge to Gatineau, Quebec and go to the Museum of History. If you are walkers it is fun to walk the bridge. The museum is just at the end of the bridge and the views of the Parliament buildings and the river are fabulous from the bridge and from the museum.
Be sure to go up to the third floor where the provinces are featured.
