Only one day in Ottawa!! What is must see?

I'm travelling with my wife in July 2001 to Canada, and we have only one day in Ottawa. Somebody have some tips about the main points of interess in the city. He have just one day and two nights in the city, and then, we are leaving, by car rental, to Montreal. What should we visit in Ottawa and in the trip to Montreal?
Thank's for your help!
Roger, go to www.ottawa.com and scroll down to near the bottom of the page where it shows attractions, restaurants, etc. It is a beautiful city and although I have not been there in quite some time, everyone who goes there enjoys their stay. Where else in Canada are you visiting?

With only one day, I would suggest you take the 2 hours bus tour first. Then I would wander around Parliament Hill. There are some excellent tours of the parliament buildings. Check under the big tent on the front lawn to sign up for free tours.
Walk over to the Byward Market for shopping, atmosphere and lunch.
For shopping wander down Elgin Street or Spark Street or The Glebe area.
Have fun....it's a great city.

I forgot to mention....
The tour we took was the Double Decker hop on hop off tour and it was great. It also goes past the Prime Minister's residence and you could stop for a tour of the Governor Generals residence.

All of the above are good ideas. Be sure to see the changing of the guards while you are there. It is quite good. There is also a nice boat tour on the river that is worth while. Go into the parliment buildings as well. Ottawa is a wonderful town and quite beautiful. The Musuem of Natural History is good as well (actually over the river in Hull, Quebec).

Follow most of the advice you've received, except...

Note that Ottawa is a museum city; pick one or two and go visit. There's a great aviation museum, the Museum of Civilization gives yuou insights into Canada's development; there's a war museum, and a Science and echnology Museum, and my tgwo faviorites, The National Gallery (art) and a Photography Museum.

BAK
