Nova Scotia, New Brunswick - need to book lodging in advance?

My wife and I will be going to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island for 2+ weeks starting on August 26th. Do we need to make our lodging reservations in advance or can we make them a day or two in advance once we are there?

Will the need for reservations lessen once we get into September?

We'll be staying in Halifax for 2-3 nights and staying in smaller towns for a night or two each places we will probably stay:
.
St. John, NB,
Moncton, NB
Charlottetown, PEI
Halifax, NS
Liverpool, NS
Digby, NS
Lexington, NS
Sydney, NS
Mirimichi, NB
Dalhouise, nb
Gaspe, QC
Saint Anne des Monts, QC

I'll appreciate any experience you can share on the lodging situation..
