Nova Scotia Itinerary
I would appreciate your critique of the following itinerary that focuses on Cape Breton Island. We plan 2 or 3 days of hiking there. The itinerary does not includ flying to or from Halifax.
Day 1: Drive from Halifax to Port Hawkesbury area. Sightseeing along the way.
Days 2 &3: Port Hawkesbury area. Drive to Baddeck area.
Days 3 & 4: Baddeck area.
Days 4 - 6: Drive to north area of the island going on the east side of the island. Spend the rest of those days in the north end.
Day 5. Drive from north end, down the west side of the island, to Port Hawkesbury area. Sightseeing along the way.
Day 6. Drive to Halifax. Sightseeing along the way.

I wld just go Halifax/Baddeck. No need to eat up 3 days in Port Hawkesbury. And, winding down the west side of the Cabot Trail, stay in Margaree/Cheticamp/Baddeck on night 7 & then just drive to Halifax airport the next day, day 8.
Of course, all of this changes if you fly in/out of Sydney as indicated on your Cape Breton thread!

I agree - go straight to Baddeck from Halifax (it's a reasonable drive if you're not stopping too many places on the way). Better to devote that time to your travels through the Highlands National Park if you're interested in hiking and scenery.

Thanks for your suggestions!
Is the Hawkespury area a reasonable day trip from Baddeck? (I'll try to find out on the Internet.) The reason I ask is that I want to see the Acadian villages on Isle Madame and any other point of interest in the area.
OceanBreeze,
I have decided not to fly into Sydney. It's so much more expensive than flying into Halifax that I would rather put those funds to use in seeing the scenery from Halifax to Cape Breton.

I've answered some of my own questions since my last post. I've got a revised itinerary and some questions about the end of it. This time I've got the numbers right!
As you review it, keep in mind that I'm a serious photographer. Due to the photography, everything takes me a lot more time than most tourists.
Day 1: Drive from Halifax to Isle Madame along the south side of NS. Sight see along the way, but trying to get to Isle Madame in mid-afternoon.
Day 2: Spend part of morning in Isle Madame if necessary. Drive along Bas d'Or Lake to Baddeck, taking our time.
Days 3 & 4: Baddeck area of Cape Breton Park. At least one full day or two half-days of hiking.
Day 5: Drive to north end of Cape Breton along the east side of the island, taking our time.
Days 6 & 7: North end of Cape Breton. At least one full day or two half days of hiking.
Day 8: Drive down west end of the island to Margaree area, taking our time.
Days 9 & 10: My only restriction is that I have to be in Halifax at night of Day 10. I was thinking of taking the northerly route of NS to see new stuff. What are your ideas about the best way to spend those two days? Is there something special to see on the way back to Halifax, such as stuff on the Sunrise Trail? Are you suggesting that Cape Breton is so fabulous that I'm better off allocating another entire Day 9 there and semi-rushing back on Day 10 to Halifax?
Many thanks for your continued ideas!
