Nice budget friendly hotel in Old Montreal
I am visiting Montreal for the first time with a friend over July 4th weekend. Any suggestions for a nice but inexpensive place to stay in old Montreal? Would someone recommend someplace other then old Montreal to stay for the first time? We might want to see some of the Jazz festival.

Hi rachel_speed01 i'm living in Montreal and I know the Jazz festival very well (Too bad you're not in town on June 30th, Stevie wonder will be on stage for a free 3 hours concert). The festival is not in the Old Port (Old Montreal). If you decide to stay in the Old Montreal and want to walk to the site .. expect a good 30-40 mins walk unless you decide to use the metro system, then it will take no longer than 12 minutes (From Champs de Mars station (Orange Line) then transferring to the Green Line at BERRI-UQAM to Place-des-Arts station) here's link for the metro http://www.stm.info
If you're looking for cheap accomodations in Old Montreal, it's going to be very difficult to get something under the $175 a night (Peak season during the festival).
If you want to stay nearby the site of the festival, You can check the Hotel des Gouverneurs Place Dupuis but the price range will be quite similar as the ones you'll find in the old Montreal. Otherwise, you'll probably have better rate if you stay at the Delta Centre-Ville with the nice 360o view restaurant at the top (10 mins walk to the old montreal about the same time to get to the site of the festival) Another hotel is Maritime hotel on rene Levesque Blvd (Bit further but few years back it was one of the good-cheap hotel around).. Don'T miss the international fireworks competition in Montreal and there ll be one spectable by the Australian on july 4th. http://www.internationaldesfeuxloto-quebec.com/en/ (just watch the sky and enjoy the show
Near the train station in downtown Montreal (3 stations away to the jazz festival, 2 of the old montreal) there are plenty of hotels available around. The Queen Elisabeth Hotel, The Marriot Centre-Ville, Holiday Inn and one comfort inn)
Have a good time in Montreal and tip for you don't waste your time renting a car, you'll have an headache just to avoid construction sites and find parkings... Everything can be easily done using the metro and city busses.... If you need more info just ask

Thanks in advance for your help with this. We also have to find somewhere to stay in Quebec City and Ottawa but the rest of our trip to Canada is sorted!

I will be staying at this B&B in the Plateau area later in July: www.bbassin.com. I see they have the room we are going to be staying in still available for the dates you might need them but the rate might be higher than you want to pay.
