I am a Newfoundlander and, therefore, biased. However, both the island of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia are beautiful. You can't go wrong with either. If I ever had to leave Newfoundland, I would move to Nova Scotia. Newfoundland is very friendly (especially towards tourists) and safe but you can say the same thing about Nova Scotia.

With that said, come to Newfoundland!! Gros Morne on the west coast easily would be the top place to visit on my list in Newfoundland. It's very scenic, plenty of hiking, and it normally has a little bit better weather than the east coast. You can easily spend three or four days on that part of the island. If you wished to stay on the west coast, you could always visit L'Anse aux Meadows on the Northern Peninsula. The Codroy Valley is also very pretty.

If you head to the east coast, you could visit the Trinity/Bonavista area which is scenic and historic. Twillingate and area also seems to be popular with tourists. Depending on the time of year that you travel, you could see an iceberg off the coast.

As far as music is concerned, you can go anyplace on this island and find local music. If you came to St. John's (the capital city), I'd check out George Street. It is a well known area of downtown that has lots of bars and local music. Or, if you come here around the first week of July, we have a folk festival which is a lot of fun. If you prefer a rock and roll type atmosphere, there is the George Street festival which happens the weekend before.

I absolutely choose Newfoundland. Nova Scotia is beautiful and the people are great but Newfoundland can't be beat for the wonderful people. We have never been so graciously welcomed anywhere. I love it and want to go back! Chipmunk - I was there on a convention and am the proud owner of a certificate making me an honouring Newfie. I kissed the cod and had some screech and my certificate is also signed by Joey Smallwood. I think that having something signed by the last father of Confederation is a treasure.
