Newfoundland in Sept

My friend and I are thinking of going to Newfoundland the first week of September and are looking for a small cottage or cabin to rent. Any advice or ideas? We don't want to spend too much. We are sqeezing this trip in as a real budget trip. We will be flying into St. John's and so will want a place somewhere on the Avalon Peninsula, perhaps around Tors Cove. I think most care rentals have a limited number of km a day, so we don't want to stray too far down the peninsula. Will the weather be good for hiking then?
I would really appreciate any advice.
