Now that's a challenge!
Port aux Basques is the ferry terminal, but not a major tourist destination otherwise. Some of the things I might suggest in the area would require a car; Port aux Basques is a small town, with nothing in the way of public transport to get you to the Cape Ray lighthouse or the Paleoeskimo archeological site (about 10 minutes drive away, so perhaps a taxi?)
However, this site does have a few suggestions:

the astralobe is something I've never seen, personally (I live in NL), but which is certainly a unique artifact. The Rose Blanche lighthouse would be a nice trip, but it's about 40 km from P.auxB.
Speaking of treks, there are some nice hiking trails if that's an interest. Any local hotel or B&B should be able to direct you.
My memory of Port aux Basques is there is nothing there. It's really not worth that long ferry ride unless you can find a bus to take you inland somewhere. If that doesn't exist perhaps you could just spend more time in Cape Breton with it's tones of hiking trails. If you could get to Gros Morne by public transport that is worth every minute of your time.
