We are excited about our trip next week, but need help deciding on how many days to stay in Montreal vs. Quebec City. We will have eight full days available with one of the days reserved for a late breakfast and drive from Montreal to Quebec City. How would you break up the trip? Should we spend more time in Montreal than QC, or the other way around? Since we will have a car for the QC part of the trip, should we leave time for day trips outside of QC?
Also, are there interesting places to visit on the way to QC, or should we just get there ASAP?
Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Hi, I've been to both, and certainly Montreal demands more time than QC.
If I were you, I'd go 5 days in Montreal and 3 in QC. If you have a particular day trip in mind from QC then maybe reduce Montreal to 4 days.
I drove directly from one to the other... but did take time for the "scenic route" between Trois Rivieres and QC... on the local highway by the river shore vs. the more inland express way. The quaint little towns there were nice, and if I'd wanted to speed things up I would have only had to go back to the main freeway, which I never did.
Good luck!
Just got back from both cities, I'd allocate two full days to Quebec, we did 1 1/2 and it was just a little short. The day you drive, consider going to Montmorency Falls, only about 15 minutes in the opposite direction from Montreal, right off the highway.
We had three full days in Montreal, with 4 I think I would have seen just about everything I wanted to see so maybe you could find another stop between the two, I thought the islands just outside of QC looked interesting.
Two tips on things to do a little off the beaten path, in QC, take the ferry over to Levis, you can stay on or get off in Levis but it gives you superb views of QC. In Montreal, the Just for Laughs festival is currently going on, we went to see La Clique, a burlesque/sideshow performance, the double jointed guy had me laughing so hard I was crying (not appropriate for youngsters). I think the website is www.hahaha.com
if you have not left yet. I say re-read Kristi, right on target. BUT with 8 days I would with out fail travel past Montmorency Falls and definately go to Tadoussac for the whales. Designated one of the most beautiful bays in the world
