the easiest way to do that is to drive to Niagara Falls... you could get a Fallsview room on the Canadian Side or stay twenty minutes away in romantic Niagara-on-the-Lake...
after a few days, you have two choices... leave your car in Niagara and jump on ViaRail train to Toronto/Montreal or continue driving ...
you could then continue to Quebec City on rail or Bus ...
If driving, you can head south from Montreal and drive through northern NY back home. by train you eliminate tons of driving, can even sleep on the train, but have to drive home from Niagara...
Don't bring the Dog as it will limit you from attractions, restaurants and possibly public transit... bad idea
What I do recommend is a tour that includes hotels, transportation, some attractions, and possibly some restaurants... we chose a six night Montreal/Quebec City that included hotel, city bus tour, three dinners and bus to QC... we were free to use the vouchers at our convenience...
have fun planning...
