Muskoka Region

Myself and my husband are travelling to Canada for two weeks late September. After much consideration we are planning on going to the muskoka region for a few days as I am an avid photographer and my husband loves fishing. I would like to book one of the resorts with a cottage/chalet/lodge. However, I just don't know where or which one to go with. We have no problems with children as long as the place would not be overrun. Inclusive or not does not matter either. Not too expensive as some of them are just clean and on a lake will do.
Please help!!

First of all, you do not have to worry about any place in Muskoka Region being "over run" w/ kids b/c they will be back in school by the end of Sept. Most Ontario public schools resume the Tuesday following the Labour Day weekend which wld be Tues, Sept 6th this year.

Second, Muskoka is a huge geographic region so you will have to narrow things down a bit b/f anyone can suggest possible places for you to stay.

Third, we need to know your definition of "not too expensive".

From the point of view of a photographer, the best part of Muskoka is the Georgian Bay / Honey Harbour and Parry Sound ares. Best rocks, big water, isolated trees waiting to pose for you.

Fishing is fine, or better than fine, too.

On a map, look t the east shore or Georgian Bay (the west side of the Muskoka area), not the south shore.

What about Gravenhurst for the Boats, the Old Steamship the Seqwin ( Royal Mail ship built in 1887
http://www.segwun.com/
, Lady Eatons Ship, and the new Wennonah... lots to photograph, and take a cruise, then maybe head up to Algonquin Park. LOTS to photograph up there, and fishing is all over Muskoka... ??
Just a thought
There is accomodation all over muskoka ranging in all prices.... you won't have a problem finding what you like and you won't need reservations that time of year. I would just come, find what you like, and if you like the price, stay wherever.... lots to pick from.
I live here and too often i hear of people who have reserved somewhere, then when they have arrived gone out and found something more appealing to them, having wished they waited and took their time before booking, so thats what i would do....
Good Luck!

Sparrow Lake has some Resorts and cottages... Many people have chosen this lake for their Fishing trips, nice lake, a few islands and the Trent ( River ) runs thru it... you can go up and down the River, go in the Locks... that might be interesting to you and again, fish and lots to photograph....
also very close to the Ships in Gravenhurst, not far either from Algonquin Park.
You could search for places to stay on Sparrow Lake, Bayview Wildwood is one that comes to mind, but there are others....
Cottages are located on the river at the mouth of the lake right at the "swing bridge" ( it swings to let the larger boats thru. ) i believe there is a lodge on the other side as well )
Trent Severn Waterway/ Sparrow Lake Region....

Thanks everyone for the input. In answer to some of the questions and replies. I am now looking at the Georgian Bay area, Parry Sound, Port Severn and Honey Harbour. I have looked at some places and all the prices are pretty ok. Any feedback on Severn Lodge? Blue Water Resort? Wawanaisa Resort? I appreciate all the feedback so far.

Thanks

Keep traffic in mind when you plan to drive to Muskoka.
Your best bet is do not go on a weekend.

If you leave Toronto on Fri & come back Sun, you will just sit in traffic. Any other time will not be an issue. You could leave toronto thursday night, and return monday morning, and you will breeze right on through.

Also, if you are in Muskoka during the week, it will be much quieter.

In late September the traffic will not be as heavy as high season, however, if you are travelling on the weekends almost anywhere - leave early. What's early? I'd say try for 8am or earlier. Not only do you get a more leisurely drive but a safer one.

In mid-July we travelled both highways going north to North Bay and Sudbury and both were great - we left about 8 am.
