Yes. Doable if you get started before 10 AM. The Jasper Tramway is a Swiss style Luftseilbahn that lifts you about 3,100 feet to the Whistler. The views from up there are a highlight of the trip.
I have taken the Maligne Lake boat tour twice and did not think much of it either time. It does not go all that far out from the dock and I did not think I saw very much other than the much publicized island of something or other.
The canyon you pass leading to the lake is more impressive in my opinion.
I would take the Whistler trip again tomorrow. I would not take the boat trip again, period.
As you drive the road, be on the watch for wildlife. I have seen sheep and elk on that route. Of course you need some luck to spot an animal.
In addition to the Jasper tramway, I highly recommend a visit to Maligne Canyon. It is 11 km or 7 miles out of Jasper townsite, on the road towards Maligne Lake.
You can spend a few minutes or a whole day taking in Maligne Canyon, depending on how much of its length you want to walk. I enjoy spending at least a couple of hours there.
Even if you don't take the cruise to Spirit Island, I still think it's worth driving to Maligne Lake. It's a lovely drive, and that road gives you a better chance of spotting wildlife than many other places in the four continguous Rocky Mountain national parks. If you stick to the speed limit and stop once or twice to view wildlife, the drive from Jasper townsite to Maligne Lake takes about an hour in one direction.
Another beautiful drive in Jasper National Park is the one to Mount Edith Cavell.
