after spending a couple of days in whistler, we'd like to go to victoria for 2 days. we would need to drive from whistler to downtown vancouver (where we have to drop off the rental car). which public mode of transportation would you recommend from downtown vancouver to the tsawwassen area (delta maybe?)? we would stay overnight somewhere close to the ferry for our trip to victoria the next morning. we can take a taxi to the ferry station.
we also need a good recommendation for lodging that night in the tsawwassen area. since we're just going to sleep there, it can be an inexpensive, clean, reasonably quiet room, w/no frills.

Don't know why you want to spend a night near Tsawwassen. You could spend the morning driving from Whistler to downtown Vancouver and dropping your rental car off. The drive from Whistler to Vancouver is about 2 hours, but even if you take into account construction delays on the Sea-to-Sky Highway (in preparation for teh 2010 Winter Olympics), it should take you no more than a morning to accomplish that.
Then you could spend the afternoon getting to Victoria. If you caught the Pacific Coah Lines bus in downtown Vancouver, it would take you to Tsawwassen and onto the ferry. The same bus would then take you from the Swartz Bay ferry terminal on Vancouver Island to downtown Victoria.

The Pacific Coach Lines buses are designed for tourists. They have luggage compartments. It is possible to use city buses to get from downtown Vancouver to Tsawwassen. But they don't have separate space for luggage. That's okay during off peak hours, but makes life uncomfortable for everyone during rush hour. I'm not saying you'll be making that trip during rush hour. I'm just mentioning that as something to keep in mind.
On a relatively short trip, such as you will have, I think getting to Victoria and having more time to explore Victoria is a better use of your time than spending a night in the vicinity of Tsawwassen. But if you really want to spend a night somewhere around Tsawwassen, I will leave it to other posters to advise you.
thank you judy in calgary. we are taking your suggestion and driving whistler to downtown vancouver to drop off rental car, catch the pacific coach bus and head out to victoria that same day. i thought my hubby wanted one last afternoon in vancouver (hence, the stay in tsawwassen), but he's leaving it up to me.....so it's a done deal.
we have booked a couple of nights in the trutch manor inn in victoria (will add another night since we'll be leaving for victoria a day early). have you ever stayed there?
Trutch Manor is a lovely B&B in a great spot. You will really enjoy it. Its a few blocks from the Inner Harbour area - maybe 20 min walk or so.
