I have booked rooms at St Chris' in Port aux Basques but someone told me I should not stay in this town--there was nothing there!! It was suggested we stay in Corner Brook. We should arrive in Newfoundland around 8:30/9:00 pm. What should we do? Are there any pubs or good places to eat that late in the evening in Port aux Basques? Thank you for any help!!!

Port Aux Basques is the whistle-stop after you get off the boat, its small and yes, there isn't much on the go and well, really don't expect any cosmopolitan feel for the next 900 kms till you hit St. John's. Cornerbrook is the closest decent sized town which may offer more variety, however it is a few hours away, so even then you will arrive at midnight.
Having said that, I'm a CFA (newfie for come from away) living in St. John's for a year now, and I've always found something fun when I'm 'round da bay... I suggest enjoy the small towns while you can, but I'm a very easy going traveller, it depends on how high maintenance you classify yourself.
You don't say when you'll be traveling, but it's getting dark earlier already and you won't arrive until almost 9:00 p.m. I'd say keep the accommodations in Port aux Basques. Roads in Newfoundland are not like the interstate in the states and at night there are moose on the loose! Besides, you'll miss some terrific scenery between your port and Corner Brook. Although I don't remember any pubs in that area, Newfoundlanders are very accommodating. Contact your host with your questions. If you're staying at a B&B, my money says that they'd be more than happy to have a meal ready and a six pack too. While you won't find any gourmet meals until you reach St John, be sure to try some cod's tongues and fin and hattie too. You'll probably tire of the potatoes, cabbage, carrots, and boiled fish....... but the scenery is magnificent! To me, Newfoundland is a step back in time to a simplier age and it made me realize how much we've lost with all of our "progress". Enjoy your trip!
Re driving at dusk...I just returned from Newfoundland and more than one local person mentioned the hazards involving moose collisions that occur at that time and in the very early morning. Extreme caution required.
