We could either go the last week of May or early to mid-July. Which would be better in terms of weather? Is July really crowded?

This one is easy. July has the best weather and even then you should take some warm clothes. While July is high season Newfoundland is never crowded. Enjoy.

Newfoundland is NEVER crowded (well maybe George Street in St John's is - lol). That having been said, July would certainly be a better option than May for weather. Freak snowstorms are not that infrequent right into June. If you have any kind of flexibility in your arrangements, from personal experience the most consistently good weather we've experienced over 30+ years of travel to "the rock" has been in mid to late August. Early September or late July would be my second choice.
Whatever you choose though, you will have a wonderful time. You will have a hard time meeting a more friendly bunch of people on the face of the earth than Newfies!

We are planning a trip to Newfoundland also. But we would love to see some icebergs which a good time is early June. We don't like travelling anywhere July/Aug. Do you know if it is almost always foggy in May/June, or depends on the year?

i too would want to see the ice bergs so i'd choose may. but, if you want to do hiking etc, then july would be your better choice.
We ended up going in early July and had great weather (mid-60s/low 70s, only one day of rain and a couple of mornings with fog that burned off by lunch). We generally don't like traveling in July/August either because of the crowds, but we didn't find Newfoundland crowded at all. We stayed in the Avalon Peninsula/St. John's area. The only time it was a little crowded was when a cruise ship was at port in St. John's, but even that wasn't bad.
We were too late to see icebergs around the St. John's area, however, it was prime whale watching season. We were told it was still possible to see icebergs in July, however, you had to go further north (there's a website that tracks icebergs, www.icebergfinder.com)
