Is it worth making Banff the home base for Lake Louise? I must answer your question with a question: What else do you plan to see while you are out there?
The distance from Banff to Lake Louise village, which is down the hill and a couple of miles from the lake itself, is 55k or about 35 miles one way.
If you plan on continuing up the Icefields Parkway the next day, you will be doing 70 miles of extra driving.
I have not stayed at the Paradise Bungalows, but they are nice I am told and the prices run in the $215 to $325 range July 1 to Sept 1. (Canadian $$, but right now you can discount those rates by only .87. That is $100 C = $87 US)
