Itinerary from NC to NS

Hi to all, Two couples planing a vacation from NC to NS&PEI late August to earley Sept.
for two weeks, need some help with travel from NC by a van to Maine and from there we need travel plans, and places to visit and some B&B recommendation. Is this good time to take this trip? Thanks for your reply in advance.

To get from North Carolina to Canada, you can either drive through New Bruswick or take a boat from Maine to Yarmouth, NS. You can get an overnight car ferry from Portland. Faster transportation is available from Bar Harbor, but, since I did that before that existed, I do not have details.

If you drive around, you should stop to see the FDR home on Campabello Island, New Bruswick. That was the one thing we missed taking the boat that I regret.

A good site that can give you routes is mapquest.com

Canadian provinces have excellent tourist information. I would get the Nova Scotia "Doers and Dreamers" book.

While my trip in 1992 involved a home exchange outside of Halifax, we did do a lot of driving around including Cape Breton (a must!) and Prince Edward Island. We did not have a lot of reservations and you do not need them. Every small town has tourist information. If you need a place to stay, just stop and they will help you find what you want. We never had a problem with not being able to get a room and we traveled during the height of the summer tourist season.

The only thing I recommend doing in advance is to get tickets to the "Anne of Green Gables" musical on PEI if you want to go. That was a must for us as my daughter was totally obsessed with those books. I called PEI from NS a few days in advance of when we wanted to go and had no problem.

One thing I recommend in NS for those who like that sort of thing is to do a whitewater raft trip on the tidal bore. These are run out of Schubenacadie in NS just north of Halifax. You go out on the river just as the bore comes in. It is a bit of a roller coaster ride but sure is something to see. One minute the rivers are mud flats, then they are rivers. Amazing! You will get filthy so schedule laundry for immediately after your raft trip. Times for the trips vary. Be sure to be on time as time and tide wait for no man!

By the way, if you want to use the car ferry, you need to make your reservations right away. The car ferry fills up very rapidly. Hopefully you are not too late for this already.

Our local newspaper reported ferry reservations are down 40% this year from last so you may not have a problem getting a reservation.

I agree, don't worry about reservations unless there is someplace specifically you want to stay overnight. I know I say this on all my posts, but I would highly recommend MacRae House in Baddeck. For $169/night you get a 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath home with all amenities. Call the Telegraph House for reservations.

I would recommend you take the Cat from Bar Harbour then drive from Yarmouth across Nova Scotia. You could do PEI last, and then travel back through New Brunswick into Maine.

What kinds of things are you looking for to see and do? May help ...

do you have two weeks from the time you leave home or two weeks here?

I don't know how long it takes to drive from NC to here, but that could affect the itinerary.

I think I will suggest a round trip type of a itinerary. You could drive up through Maine into either Calais into St. Stephan NB and follow the Fundy drive. I would say you should make a stop in St. Andrews by the Sea which is a resort town. There are a ton of B&B's to choose from in this down. Continue onto Saint John, either stop or continue onto Fundy National park. From here head towards Moncton, and then to PEI via the Confederation Bridge. Drive around PEI making sure to stop in Charlottetown and Cavindish. I would only spend 2 days max in PEI. Then take the Wood island Ferry over to NS. From here head towards Cape Breton Island. Spend a night or two here. I really enjoyed Fort Louisburg, which is a historical site of great importance to the Maritimes. Then head off the island, going towards Halifax. I would spend a few days in this area. Then on to Yarmouth, catch a ferry back to Maine, and go on home. The other choice for NB is to cross the Border at Houlton into Woodstock NB, following the River Valley route, and stop in Fredericton, which is the Capital city of our beautiful province. I think it is the prettiest city in the East. Spend a night or two here, then onto Moncton or Fundy, then cross to PEI.

I think you could do this in 12 days, just spend a few days in each place, say 2 days in NB, 3 PEI, 2 days Cape Breton, 3 Halifax, 2 Yarmouth...or something like that. I don't think that would be too hectic.

george1940: Are you taking I-95? If so, don't forget to allow for s-l-o-w- traffick as you approach NYC and for the next 2 hours or so thereafter as you travel north. I went through last summer and hit bumper-to-bumper traffick on I-95 for longer than I care to remember. Actually, making it to Maine in one day, while doable, will take a toll on you guys. If possible, perhaps leave the late afternoon the day before and get on up the road a few humdred miles and then rest. Have a wonderful trip!!
