Itinerary feedback, please

After totally changing our vacation plans for this year, I'm finally starting to look at some details for a vist to the maritimes. We'll be traveling for the first two weeks in October, and flying into and out of Bangor. We're not fond of flying on regional aircraft, and getting a flight to Halifax was just a multi-stop nightmare we can't stomach, lol.

We're not looking at doing a really adventurous vacation, as between us, we have a back problem and joint issues. We do some walking, at our own pace, but no 5 mile hikes. We are me and dh, early 50s and 60s. We like museums, getting a feel for a local culture, beautiful drives and scenery, etc. So, here a rough outline that I've come up with so far. I've bumped up Google driving times, but maybe not enough of a bump?

Fly to Bangor and either overnight there, depending on arrival time, or drive to Hopewell Rocks (6 hours). Likely overnight there, then drive to Halifax (4 hours).

A couple or three nights in Halifax, with trips to Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg, and sightseeing in and around Halifax.

Drive to Baddeck (4 hours). Is this a suitable base for a couple days driving the Cabot Trail, or should we change locations? I'm hoping our schedule coincides to give us a taste of the Celtic Colours festival.

After a few nights around Cape Breton Island, we'd take the ferry to PEI. No real plans there yet, but Green Gables area is a must, and we'd like to get a feel for Charlottetown as well.

We'd return to Bangor from PEI.

A couple of questions: I'm slightly nervous on bridges and tunnels - will I likely be white-knuckling the Confederation Bridge?

Food: dh eats anything with gusto. I don't eat any seafood, and overall, we're more casual eaters (think pizza and sandwiches as opposed to starched tablecloths and fancy food in sauces). With an expected preponderance of seafood, will I also be able to find something simple in non-urban areas?

I appreciate any insight you can give me!

Hi there

The confederation bridge is not too bad- it's long but straight and i feel like you dont feel too exposed ( and i can get nervous on bridges). As for PEI, keep in mind that the tourist attractions at Green Gables are not open outside of the summer season - the area is very quiet - so you need to check carefully exactly the sites you want to see. PEI is gorgeous in the fall ( well all year round in my opinion!) and the scenery is always spectactular - but the touristy stuff closes down at labour day. There will be local diners etc to eat at in every small town i would say. I live on PEI and love it here.

The white-knuckling on the bridge will be entirely the result of seeing in print the cost of your bridge toll off the island (payable only upon departing PEI).

In truth, I cannot think of much anyone needs to add to your outline, as you have clearly researched and composed a very realistic plan.

Do print-out the tide times for Hopewell Cape and a couple of other spots around the Bay, for the entire window of when you'll be in the area.

I would add an overnight in St. John, and drive/walk the Fundy Trail Parkway, and St.Martins Sea Caves.

We enjoyed the Caves restaurant in St. Martins.

Millions of people take bridges and tunnels everyday and live to enjoy another day, so will you.

Everything is pretty simple in the Maritimes.

Thanks for the replies. I got worried about the Anne of Green Gables attractions, birdtoner, so I was relieved to find that the Heritage Place is open until Oct. 31, and the museum until Oct. 15. Whew! I'm thinking of staying two nights on PEI, though I don't have the particulars fleshed out yet.

We will be in NS during Celtic Colours, which I'm excited about. We're probably going to take our chances, since we won't be there for the whole festival, and I can't wait until the schedule is released to make lodging reservations. Regardless, hopefully we'll enjoy whatever we get to see.

I'll have to do some research on St. John, I haven't given any thought to stopping there.

Thanks again - I may be back with more questions later!
