We're headed for the Canadian Rockies next week and I'm wondering how bad mosquitoes, flies, no-see-ums, other insects are in the mountains? Will we need insect repellant all the time? occasionally? not at all? What do you think?

Because of the heavy rains earlier this year, the mosquitoes have been pretty bad (perfect hatching weather for the little buggers). I just got back from Waterton and we needed repellant for both mosquitoes and black flies.
Depending on the temperature, wind, clothing and your activity level, you may or may not need to have it on all the time. But, I would carry it with you at all times so you have it when you do need it.
We were in Banff just last week. There were a few trails where the mosquitoes were swarming in sections (Lake Agnes trail, especially by Mirror Lake, and on the trail out to the Ink Pots), but thankfully the weather was nice enough to wear long pants and long sleeves so we could forego the repellant for the most part (I don't like putting that stuff on my skin). I hear one of the best insect repellants is LISTERINE! I am going to test it in Wells Gray Park next wekk. But yes, prepare for bugs. If hiking or walking I recommend the mosquito netting jackets and hats and long pants, then you are in charge!
Try an OFF clip on and or Permethrin repellant that you spray on your clothing and not your skin. Strong DEET products can melt plastic and aren't very good for your skin.
Just back and want to report that with normal insect repellant we got along pretty well. Would not have wanted to be there without insect repellant!
I've tried Listerine, and it doesn't work. I read on the 'net that at one time, it contained pure eucalyptus oil (which is usually one of the ingredients in "natural" bug repellents) and I suppose it may have worked then, but I imagine now that all the ingredients are cheaper chemicals.
I'm glad it was bearable for you, Kristinelaine. For any readers who are planning vacations soon, the bugs are on the wane now, as is usual at this time of year... we've had some pretty cold nights lately, almost down to freezing.
