info on eastern Canada and Nova Scotia

We hope to drive through Montreal and Quebec City on the way to Nova Scotia. We will take our time. Any suggestions of things to see, especially in Nova Scotia? I think we will go in August.

I suggest finding the web site for Nova Scotia. I lost the bookmark when my system crashed two years ago and never looked it up again. I went in '96 and enjoyed it. We drove around the Gaspe Peninsula and found it interesting although a knowledge of French would hav helped. We spent two nights doing it and found that we should have allowed a little more time. The road is slow and we stopped a lot.
The Nova Scotia sights that I liked were the coastal areas and the Bell museum on Cape Breton Island.
The tourist authority for Nova Scotia puts out a very good publication.
It was called the Doers and Dreamers Guide the year I got it. I think if you get that publication you will have a valuable resource to help.
One place I strongly suggest is the fortress as Louisbourg. It is a pre Revolutionary War fort. In the summer, theatrical types in period costumes re-enact the life of the times. It gives history from the French side, which we did not get when I was in school -- it was more from the English point of view. I found the history lesson to be very interesting. The fortress is up on the northeast shore of Cape Breton Island, quite a ways up and out. But it is worth it.

Hi,
Halifax is a must, so is Lunenberg, Peggy's Cove..if you can take a sail on the Bluenose for a memorable trip...also a must is Louisbourg -far from halifax but well worth the drive. Like the previous post mentionned the province produces a very good tourist booklet. enjoy the fresh lobster.

If you enjoy wonderful scenery then I highly recommend both the Cabot Trail and the South Shore. You can start at Peggy's Cove and work your way down to Lunenburg. You will want to spend a few days on the South Shore. In August there are lots of event going on in Halifax so do not skip the city. Halifax is the best in the summer time.

I would dearly like to see Nova Scotia but can't get any time off during the summer. Would the weather still be fine in September? Would it be alright to consider outdoor activities such as sea kayaking at that time? How about cycling, etc?

Hi Keith,

I think that September is a great time to visit NS, as long as you are not counting on swimming. But for kayaking and cycling it is great. Often the weather in Sept is as nice and hot as August. In my opinion that is one of the best months to visit NS. We tend to have a late starting summer here.

Keith,

3 years ago I cycled a 350 mile loop in NS at the end of June. We did a loop from Yarmouth to Liverpool to Annapolis Royal and back to Yarmouth for the ferry back to Portland Me. It was a delightful trip, the roads were great and everyone was very friendly. The weather in late June was ideal, 60's to 70's and I would guess that Sept. might be about the same.
Enjoy -
Sandra
