I need help finding low airfare to Winnipeg and other general questions.

My husband is planning a hunting trip at the end of September in Manitoba. I was thinking about going along and staying the 3 days in Winnipeg. What fun things are there to do in Winnipeg and can you use local transportation without renting a car? Also the best price airline tickets I have found leaving from Memphis are $1210 each. Does anyone have suggestions on finding a cheaper flight? I used Qixo and also checked with Northwest and US Canada. I would appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks.

You did not mention when in Sept? If you are staying over a Sat night the fares are cheaper. The best fare, would be if you book a memphis/toronto/winnipeg/toronto/memphisairfare. Check to see what the best airfare is to Toronto from Memphis, and then a separate ticket to Winnipeg. Air Canada flies to Winnipeg from Toronto and so does a charter airline called Royal Airlines. If you are not staying over a Saturday night, then that might be the reason, the airfare is so high.

I am a Winnipeger, so feel free to email me at the above address with any specific questions you may have..someone on the Europe forum was kind enough t do the same for me so I thought I would return the favour to another traveller...
Anyway, Winnipeg is a great city. The Forks in Downtown Winnipeg is a European Style Market and makes for a nice afternoon. St. Boniface, the francophone district of the city may also be of interest to you...the food is delicious...
Let me know what interests you and I'll try to help..
Can't help with flights..
Good Luck,
Nicki

Thanks Antoniette and Nicki. Do you have hotel suggestions? Also could I use local transportation without renting a car?

I caught your other posting, and like I said I will compile a list of nearby hotels for you...though staying near the airport may increase your costs somewhat.
In regard to transportation, there is the local transit bus system, which runs very well and is almost always on time. Depending on what you intend on doing in Winnipeg, for example if you plan to check out the diverse areas of the city, a car would be preferable. But the bus is still a possibility. Let me know what you are planning to do and then I can better give advice on the trasportation to get there...

To Nicki. I think I answered your question on the other post. I would appreciate any suggestions. If I come along on his trip, I don't think I want to rent a car. I will probably just use local transportation. What would be fun to do in 3 days for me? Thanks

Sheila, check out the historic Fort Garry Hotel in downtown Winnipeg. It's one of those wonderful Canadian Pacific railroad hotels. I'll leave the activity suggestions to locals, but concerning airfare, I think you will be able to do MUCH better than the fare you've seen so far. Memphis is a NWA hub and so is Minneapolis. I'm betting you can catch a zone fare sale between now and then which would place you in "The Peg" for something in the neighborhood of $350 without too much difficulty. Zone fare coupons will show up in your mail from time to time if you are a WorldPerks member. If you're not, sign up at www.nwa.com and also subscribe to the e-mail service that will advise you of fare sales. Late September is generally not a bad time for a fare into Canada. Just keep your eyes open and be ready to pounce when the inevitable fare sale covering that travel period shows up.

Thanks Jim. I have decided not to go along on this trip but I will be searching for airline tickets for my husband and his hunting buddy. I may go along next fall if if likes it well enough to return. Thanks for the advice. They will need a place to stay for one night to stay over on a Saturday so probably near the airport would be more convenient for them.
