"I just drive the car": Highway 20 from Bella Coola - Lodging??

Jump to last reply

Once again, DH is yearning for the open road. This time, he wants to drive the Freedom Road to Bella Coola... Highway 20. Basically, it's a driving loop, and we'll be on 20 both to Bella Coola and back, because once just isn't enough.

I've taken care of most of the details, but need a little guidance on our drive back from Bella Coola to West Vancouver (we will be heading over to Tofino). Mostly, I'm looking for lodging suggestions around the Williams Lake area, so that we can have time to make some short stops along Highway 20 and still pull in by late afternoon to relax. Not looking for a "destination" lodging, nor a very budget place - just that it is a little difficult to judge. B&B is ok as is a motel.

Along the lodging topic, we will be stopping off near Horseshoe Bay and looking for recommendations there as well - catching early ferry to Vancouver Island. Have only seen Horseshoe Bay Motel from outside (not impressive), but pictures online of rooms look good. Thoughts? Or, other West Van area properties just for a decent night's sleep.

Any other thoughts about stops for gas, etc., would be most welcome. Save me.

Hi Sludick - Sounds interesting! It is fun just keeping up with you and your travels. When is this adventure going to take place? Actually the Horseshoe Bay Motel is just fine. It is very comfortable and clean. Its actually quite cozy. You won't find accommodation in West Van - they are a little different in there - they have their strict rules regarding businesses etc. In the old days (when I was a kid a million years ago) it was just a bedroom community with a few shops and restaurants. They have tried to keep it that way. So, the closest accommodations would be at the foot of Capilano road. You can get up to the highway in a few minutes from there but I think you would be happy in Horseshoe Bay.

I know my husband used to stay at the Super 8 in Williams Lake when he went to visit his son in Terrace. He found it quite comfortable.

That's about all I can add as I have never done the Bella Coola route.

    Keep me updated!

Great to "see" you, traveller69! We had plans to vacation with DH's aunt more in the Banff/Jasper area this fall, but she is experiencing some health issues and feels it best not to plan for any distance traveling. So I reworked the plans and this will be late September - early October.

We'll start with a couple of days in Seattle, head up to Wells Gray for 3 nights (Moul Creek Lodge, as you recommended). Then a long day's drive to Bella Coola for another 3 nights. It's too late for the ferry and besides, DH is fascinated by that road in, so it will be back out only as far as Williams Lake. Then down to Horseshoe Bay and followed by a stay in Tofino (Middle Beach Lodge, a favorite place) and Victoria.

Good to hear about Horseshoe Bay Motel, I would really prefer to stay there. My alternative actually was the foot of Capilano Road, I recall a couple decent-looking places there. Just love to watch the ferries come and go from Horseshoe Bay, though.

Will let you know what we finally settle on for Williams Lake; thanks for the suggestion. It's DH's chance for a room with TV before Tofino, lol.

Wondering how you're doing - will send you an email to touch base and perhaps make plans for a GTG - we'll be 3 nights in Victoria. Cheers!
