How to make my first vacation a memorable one??

Hi...everyone,

I'm planning my first vacation trip to Canada, hopefully in June or Aug this year or perhaps next year. There will be 2 - 3 of us, single ladies. We'll stay with relatives in Vancouver & Edmonton and hope to find guided tours to the Canadian Rockies & Victoria Island because we will not drive. Still considering and undecided about the following aspects:

1) should we fly from Malaysia to Vancouver or Edmonton as our first leg?

2) depart from Edmonton or Vancouver for our tour to the Canadian Rockies?

3) any day trip going out from Vancouver & Edmonton?

4) since it's our first trip, what are the things to see and do in Vancouver & Edmonton if we have 4 days in each cities?

Hope someone will give us advice and suggestions.

Thanks

Vancouver is great. There is a big park called STanely Park that is great for a visit. It has a sightseeing bus that takes you to all the attractions in the park for free. (or at least the last time I was there) In the park is a sea wall where you can walk along a path next to the sea.

There is the capilano suspension bridge and heritage park that's fun.

Also you can consider taking a ferry to the island next to Vancouver. Very beautiful natural towns there.

Good Luck

Theresa

Sometimes names are confusing.

The city of Victoria, the capital city of the province of British Columbia, is on Vancouv er Island.

Vancouver, the biggest city in British Columbia, is on the mainland.

And Victoria Island is very, very far north in Canada, and is completely unrelated to the city of Victoria, and is not a place for toruists like you.

And mountains are confusing.

The Coast Mountains are on the edge of the mainland, and are right next to Vancouver.

Going east, there are various other mountains between Vancouver and The Rocky Mountains, which are on the border between the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta.

Although we commonlythink of the Rockies as running north-south, they really are on an angle, heading north-west.

This means that Edmonton is several hundred miles from the Rocky Mountain.

Edmonton is north of Calgary, but because of the angle of the mountains, Calgary is less than one hundred miles from the mountains, and you can see them from Calgary.

I don't think it matters if you are starting in Edmonton or Vancouver.

Perhaps one way of deciding on the start city is to think of which relatives would be best to introduce you to Canada. One may have more time and be able to show you around their city when you arrive, and make you more confortable in Canada.

Vancouver is a more interesting city, so it would probably be best to allow more time there than in Edmonton.

As I think about this more...

Arrive in Edmonton, take a bus to Jasper and tours from Jasper to Lake Louise and BAnff, and then you can take a bus of some sort to Vancouver.

By the time you have done this, you will be quite comfortable in Canada. Then you can look around Vancouver on your own, take a tour to Victoria, and return to Vancouver, where you can look around by yourselves for several more days before flying home.

Bak..oh thanks so much for your clarification, it certainly makes our planning more easy.

So here's our tentative itinery. Hope someone will help us with our questions here or give us ideas of what to do:

Day 1 - 4 Edmonton - West Edmonton Mall, Whyte Ave,
Any day trip to the nearby attractions?

Day 5 Jasper - what to see if we have 1 day here. What kind of bus should we take from Edmonton?

Day 6 - 7 Lake Louise - Is 2 days enough or is there any guided tour to Lake Louise/Morraine Lake, Yoho National Park, Takkakkaw Falls, Emerald Lake?

Day 8 - 9 Banff - what to do for 2 days? Is Banff National Park in this area?

Day 10 - 13 Vancouver - Stanley Park, Gastown, Robson St, Granville Island,
How long does the bus trip take from
Banff? Do we need to spend overnight on the way... Kamloops, Kelowna, Vernon, Peachland or Summerland??

Day 15 - 16 Vancouver Island - What to see in Victoria & Tofino? Is 2 days enough? How much time to spend in Buchart Garden? Should take a bus or ferry to the island?

Day 17 - home sweet home

Thanks.

If you aren't planning on driving to any of your destinations, then setting an itinerary based on just your initial impressions probably isn't very practical right now.

Perhaps using a tour company as an initial source of information, and as a possible source for an eventual guided tour, might be useful to start you off. This is a tour company for Alberta and BC that I'm familiar with:

http://www.brewster.ca/

Edmonton is a nice city, but it's not really a tourist destination. Your visit will most likely be about family... and the Mall. But you could easily take the bus to Jasper from there and spend a couple days seeing Jasper and a few sights nearby, before joining a tour.

http://greyhound.ca/
(bus company for Edm.->Jasper)

This is one of the tours that Brewster offers:
********
DAY 1 Jasper
Arrive on your own in Jasper today so you can prepare for your early morning departure.

DAY 2 Lake Louise
Today you will travel down one of the most scenic roadways in Canada, and one of the most spectacular mountain highways in the world. The Columbia Icefield is your stop today where you will travel on an all-terrain Ice Explorer (seasonal*) onto the surface of the Athabasca Glacier. (April 15 to October 15, weather permitting). In the afternoon view the natural wonders of Peyto Lake, Bow Glacier and Bow Lake before arriving in Lake Louise.

DAY 3 Banff
This morning you are free to stroll around the shores of Lake Louise set against the backdrop of the dominating Victoria Glacier. This afternoon, your luxury motorcoach journeys to Emerald Lake and the Yoho Valley (seaonal*), then on to world renowned Banff National Park.

DAY 4 Calgary
Start your day with a Discover Banff Guided Excursion. Your highlight is a visit to the Cave & Basin Historic Site, birthplace of Canada's National Parks. Early afternoon, board an express coach to either Calgary International Airport or Calgary city centre to complete your getaway.
*******

It's a 4 hr bus ride from Edmonton to Jasper. From Calgary you can then take another guided tour to Vancouver (or simply fly into Vancouver or Victoria) where you can plan your time in the city and on Vancouver Island.

http://westjet.com/

Another tour company that I've booked with is viator, and they offer several different types of tours for Vancouver and Vancouver Island if you want to have a look there:

http://www.viator.com/British-Columbia/d261-vd

If you would feel more comfortable flying into Vancouver and seeing Vancouver, and then Victoria and Vancouver Island first, then just go at it from the other direction. Your flights may be easier to book into and from Vancouver and Calgary so be open to that itinerary as well.

Again, without driving your own vehicle, I think arranging tours for most of your visit---- unless your relatives are planning on being tour guides would make the most sense.

For me, the highlights of this trip are the Jasper to Calgary tour, and then the Vancouver and Vancouver Island regions. I would fly between in order to make the most of my time.

Hope that helps you somewhat.

Thanks...Tobie, that's surely a good idea. I'll check out the websites soonest and find out which itinery fits my plan and post more questions I need to find out.

1) I saw in the brewster website that provide gondola cabin(cable car) up to Banff Gondola . Is this a wonderful and fun experience?

2) Please recommend what airlines to book if I choose to fly from Banff to Vancouver?

3) I also read some review about Okanagan Valley which somewhere in between Banff & vancouver.. is this place worth going for a visit?

Thanks.

Hi excite~

1) At least one gondola ride somewhere would be great! I've been on the Jasper Tram but haven't gone in Banff. I would definitely try to do one. Love it!

http://jaspertramway.com/

2) You can't fly from Banff, but would go from Calgary or Edmonton. The Westjet website I already included, but you can check out Air Canada or Air Transat too. I tend to use Air Canada or WestJet.

http://www.aircanada.com
http://www.airtransat.ca/

3) The Okanagan Valley is very lovely with fruit orchards, lakes and wineries. Our family had summer vacations there most years. But if I had to choose, I would spend that portion of time on Vancouver Island's Pacific Rim coast which is spectacular (as opposed to "pretty").

Hope that answers some questions for you.

How to book a whale watching trip from Vancover or Victoria?

Will there be any whales in end May or early June this year?

You can do a search on this forum by putting in the word "whale". Different information will pop up for you....like this:

http://fodors.com/forums/threadselec...9&tid=34972082

Maybe someone else has more specific ideas but if you might be in Tofino then you could consider that as well.

Hi ... I'm back with more questions. We have decided to spend 20 days in Canada and now trying to fit all in our schedule of our itinery. However we still don't have any idea of the directions and locations, so hope that someone can give us feedback for our plans here, whether some of the things we can do it on the same day??

26 May: 11.40am arrive Vancouver... staying with relatives either in 23rd Ave or Euclid Ave. How far apart is these 2 places and from downtown?

27 - 29 May: explore Vancouver city
Day 1 : Stanley Park Downtown beaches –English Bay Beach, 2nd & 3rd Beaches West Side Beaches – Kitsilano/Jericho/ Wreck Beach. Which of the beaches is accesible from Stanley Park?

Day 2 : Granville Island Public Market & Net Loft, Gastown(Historic plaque route, Steam Clock, Storyeum)

Day 3 : Robson Street, Chinatown, Commercial Drive, Main Street, Metrotown Centre

30 May :Go by ferry/bus to Victoria & stay at B&B overnight. Visit Butchart Garden, Royal BC Museum & Titanic, ThunderBird Park, Marine Drive, The Uplands, Beacon Hill Park, Mile Zero. Are all these places accesible on our own or by public transport. Is there any tour?

31 May : Toffino/Hot Spring Cove : whale & bear watching trip, Pacific Rim Coast. May have to choose either one, anyway how far is the Pacific Rim Coast/National Park from Tofino? Can anyone recomend tour with both whale and bear watching? Any suggestion for B&B in Tofino?

1 June : Back to Vancouver by bus.

2 June: VanDusen Botanical Garden, North Shore, Lonsdale Quay (take seabus),English Bay/West End. Can these be done in one day?

3 June : Day trip to Whistler & Shannon Falls

4 June :Grousse Mountain Skyride... Which one is worth it or have a better view if have to choose one, either Jasper Skytram or Banff Gondola??

5 June : Any suggestion??

6 June : fly from Vancouver to Edmonton, stay at with uncle at Rowland Ave.

7 June : West Edmonton Mall

8 June : Visit friends

9 June : River Valley, Fort Edmonton Park, Muttart Conservatory. Can these be done in a day?

10 June : Elk Island National Park, Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village... How far if have to drive from city?

11 June : Edmonton – Jasper - Banff Icefields Parkway, Banff Upper Hot Spring, stay overnight. My uncle will drive & take us there.

12 June : Lake Louise, Yoho National Park, Takakkaw Fall, Morraine Lake. Thinking of joining a day tour or better to have someone drive?

13 June : Calgary & Drumheller... How far is these 2 towns? What are the things/sightseeing atractions if have only 1 day here?

14 June : Galgary - Vancouver - Hong Kong. Is it possible to take a connecting flight? Just afraid that there will be delays and we might miss our flight. Our flight depart 2.10pm from Vancouver to Hong Kong.

We still haven't plan out where to stay in Victoria, Tofino, Rockies (Banff or Canmore?), Calgary. Really hope someone will give some recommendations, preferably B&B reachable by public transportation.

I also hope to download some city maps, any websites with good maps so that I know where to go about?

Cheers!

You are trying to squeeze in too much!
For example, if I'm reading this correctly, you are going to drive /ride to Tofino from Victoria, try to do various tours the same day, then leave the next morning......?

I'm exhausted just reading about your trip......

I too am exhausted reading this itinerary!

I will read over your Vancouver itinerary again...but right now..don't worry about going to Metrotown - giant mall....busy, busy...and you can find better shopping on Robson and 4th Avenue in Kits.

Alrighty -

26 May: 11.40am arrive Vancouver... staying with relatives either in 23rd Ave or Euclid Ave. How far apart is these 2 places and from downtown?

27 - 29 May: explore Vancouver city
Day 1 : Stanley Park Downtown beaches –English Bay Beach, 2nd & 3rd Beaches West Side Beaches – Kitsilano/Jericho/ Wreck Beach. Which of the beaches is accesible from Stanley Park?

(You can see Stanley Park - You can wander down to English Bay, walk along the seawall to 2nd and 3rd beaches and then head over to the Aquarium which is in the park itself. You can then head down to Denman street - a nice street that runs near English Bay and then walk up Robson Street and do some shopping and see the "West Side" neighbourhood). That would make a nice first day in Vancouver.

Day 2 : Granville Island Public Market & Net Loft, Gastown(Historic plaque route, Steam Clock, Storyeum)

Very doable - as long as you have transportation. I think that Storyeum is closed - though I could be entirely wrong. Have lunch at the Water St. Cafe in Gastown...good lunch and nice atmosphere - totally hopping!

Day 3 : Robson Street, Chinatown, Commercial Drive, Main Street, Metrotown Centre

(Doable - though I would take out Metrotown Center unless you are really addicted to shopping. It is a HUGE mall, and I can't stand being there for more than five minutes, but that's just me maybe). Chinatown will take at least an entire morning...if you want to wander in and out of the stores, etc. Robson street, if you also stop for lunch, can easily take up an afternoon.

Did you want to see the Museum, and everything else the same day that you arrive in Victoria? That is WAY too much. The ferry ride is at least 1 1/2 hours from the ferry terminal on the mainland, and it takes at least a 1/2 hour to get into Victoria. Once you check in, get your bearings and get down to the Inner Harbour I am not sure how much time you will have left in the day. So, example..if you leave Vancouver on the 9 am ferry (you have be at the terminal - with reservations - no later than 8 a.m., you don't actually arrive in Victoria until 11 am at the earliest. Over to the B&B, lunch, and then the Royal BC Museum, then dinner...then walk the Inner Harbour....that's about all you could really cram in one day IMO.

(Can't help you - never been to Tofino)

1 June : Back to Vancouver by bus.

2 June: VanDusen Botanical Garden, North Shore, Lonsdale Quay (take seabus),English Bay/West End. Can these be done in one day?

(You could do VanDusen and then head downtown and catch the seabus over to Londsdale Quay and wander around. On the way back home I would go up Granville Street (south of Broadway to 16th Avenue) and do some wandering through that neighbourhood. Nice galleries and good shopping. Maybe stop in for a quick spa treatment - pedicure to revive your tired feet!)

3 June : Day trip to Whistler & Shannon Falls

(Doable - though I would just stick with Whistler - it takes at least 1 1/2 hours to get there. Just mostly a shopping place unless you take the gondalo up to the top and do a bit of hiking and view catching).

4 June :Grousse Mountain Skyride... Which one is worth it or have a better view if have to choose one, either Jasper Skytram or Banff Gondola??

(Doable - I would then head back downtown and just wander around Robson street and have a leisurley lunch and relax).

5 June : Any suggestion??

(Back to Stanley Park and English Bay if the weather is nice. Grab a blanket, sit and relax! Oh...and pack.)

Hopefully the weather will be beautiful (we generally have nice weather in July/August). Bring an umbrella just in case!

Camelback has given you a lot of good info. Now, to add to it .......

If you drive, it takes at least 5 hours (not counting stops) to get from Victoria to Tofino. I'm not sure how long it takes by bus. When my son did it, he had to change buses in Nanaimo, and that added time to the journey.

It is out of the question to travel from Victoria to Tofino and do your proposed activities in one day.

You are overdoing Vancouver and short-changing the Rockies. You eliminate AT LEAST one day from Vancouver and add it to the Rockies.

I think it's a good idea to do a day trip to Whistler, but there is no need to do that AND do the SkyRide up Grouse Mountain as well.

Also, you would use your time more efficiently if you grouped together attractions that were geographically close to each other. For example, VanDusen Botanical Garden is to the south of downtown Vancouver, so it does not make sense to see it on the same day as a visit to the North Shore, which is across Burrard Inlet to the north of downtown Vancouver.

You really need to get hold of that map.

I've got to go now. I'll come back with some info about the Rockies, Calgary and Drumheller later.

http://maps.google.ca is a fantastic resource for maps. All you need to do is plug in an address, and presto - you not only have the map right there in front of your eyes, but you can also look at the satellite image of that very place. Plus you can zoom in really close (which is always fun, as you can actually see individual people on the sidewalks!) So it'll give you a better appreciation for the layout of the city.

As well, the best part about Google Maps is that you can click on the Get Directions link (located above the map itself) and you can enter a starting address, and an ending address, and they will trace out a route on the map.

As for your question about Euclid Avenue, I have no idea where that is. 23rd Avenue very, very long, spanning east-west across the city. In the western half of the city, it is known as West 23rd Avenue. Likewise, it is known as East 23rd Avenue in the eastern half of the city. However, unless you know the exact distance or the crossroads, it's hard to know how far it will be from downtown. I mean, if it's located on the intersection of W 23rd Ave and Granville, then you're only 23 blocks south of downtown. However, if it's located on E 23rd Avenue by Boundary Road, then it would not only be 23 blocks south of downtown, but several kilometers out of the way to the east.

by the way, I looked up Euclid Ave in Google Maps. It's located about a 20-30 minute drive south-east of downtown. It's actually closer to Burnaby and Metrotown Mall than it is to downtown.

By the way - Metrotown Mall has the exact same stores one would find in Robson Street and Pacific Centre Mall, although I find the stores can actually be much larger in Metrotown. Whether you want to include Metrotown should be up to you.

VANCOUVER ISLAND TO EDMONTON

Excite2, you would make better use of your time if you did not take the ferry both to and from Vancouver Island. It would make more sense to go from Vancouver to Tofino first, then go to Victoria, then fly non-stop from Victoria to Edmonton. This would save you from returning to Vancouver before you flew on to Edmonton.

BANFF DAY TOURS

When you’re in the Banff / Lake Louise area, you might use Discover Banff Tours for your day trip(s). Their starting point is Banff townsite, so you would be better off staying in Banff than in Lake Louise.

http://www.banfftours.com/

JASPER DAY TOURS

If you manage to free up a day for exploring Jasper (by deleting a day from Vancouver, for example), you could use SunDog Tours for a day trip in that area.

http://www.sundogtours.com/

JASPER – BANFF TRANSPORTATION

If you need to catch a bus from Jasper to Banff (or vice versa), you could use Brewster.

http://www.brewster.ca/

BANFF - CALGARY TRANSPORTATION

Downtown Calgary is about 2 hours’ drive from Banff townsite. Greyhound has a bus that goes from downtown Banff to downtown Calgary (or at least close to downtown Calgary). Otherwise most shuttle buses from Banff to Calgary go to Calgary Airport, which is well outside of the downtown core. Banff Airporter and SunDog Tours both operate good shuttle services that connect Banff and Calgary Airport.

http://www.banffairporter.com/

http://www.sundogtours.com/

DRUMHELLER

Drumheller is between 1.5 hours and 2 hours’ drive from Calgary, depending on your starting point in Calgary. It is very difficult to get to Drumheller and the Tyrrell Museum if you don’t have a car. The only company that I know of that operates tours is Hammerhead Tours.

http://www.hammerheadtours.com/

CALGARY – VANCOUVER FLIGHT

I believe you are justified in fearing that you’ll miss your connection in Vancouver on your way home. You should arrange a generous lay over at Vancouver Airport. The absolute minimum lay over I would be comfortable with is 3 hours. That is, I would want to land in Vancouver by 11.00 a.m. if I was departing on a 2.00 p.m. flight. If I really wanted to be safe, I would be even more comfortable with a 4-hour lay over.

This would be especially true if the flights had been booked separately from each other, that is, if they were not “linked” to each other and if the two airlines’ were not responsible for compensating me for each others’ delays.

Luckily Vancouver is an hour behind Calgary. So the flight, which takes 1.5 hours, lands only 30 minutes after take off, according to local times. If a flight departs from Calgary at 9.00 a.m. Mountain Time, it lands in Vancouver at around 9.30 a.m. Mountain Time. That will work in your favour.

VANCOUVER TRANSIT PLANNING

Here is a web page that you can use to plan your trips on public transportation in Vancouver:

http://tripplanning.translink.bc.ca/

Hope that helps.

Thanks to everyone here for giving me so much info about the various places ....they really helps!! I might cut down some of the places after listening to all your comments. I am just trying to list down all the potential places.

Where can I get a map once I arrive in Vancouver? Is there anyway I can book the accomodation at the tourist info centre, downtown or at the airport?

The address I might be staying is either at 404-3575 Euclid Ave or 3575 East 23rd Ave. Just want to find out how to go downtown from there?

About Victoria & Tofino, where could we find a whale & bear Watching tour? Someone mentioned about a tour company (Remote Passage)... is it in Tofino or Victoria?? We might consider to spend more time in Victoria & Tofino after all... maybe 2 days each! Coz we want to go to Butchart Garden, Parliament House, Royal BC Museum & Titanic, etc...

Anyone can recommend a B&B or hotel in the Inner Harbour? Not so expensive... around CAD$100-150. I heard good reviews that Tofino is facing to the Pacific Ocean and its view is spectacular. So hoping to stay & relax there. Again... any good suggestion of a place to stay??

I will try out the google maps and come back with question if any. Thanks Carmanah! That's what I need.

Just one more question.... do you think we should fly from Edmonton or Calgary to Vancouver after going to the Rockies?? Is Banff nearer to Edmonton or Calgary? We will fly with Air Canada from Vancouver to Hong Kong.

Thanks again.

Cheers!
