Unfortunately, we had to cancel our planned trip to Newfoundland this summer due to my husband's back surgery. I had gotten some good advice from folks here, and hope to do the trip next summer.

I keep checking on the Forum for posts about Newfoundland, but haven't seen any and wonder why it's so quiet. Hasn't anyone from Fodors visited this year or is it still the best kept secret? I so enjoy hearing the reports, comments and answers to questions.

After hearing about our plans for Newfoundland, about 14 of our nearest and dearest friends are begging to go with us next summer. I'm sure I'll be back soon with questions about traveling with a group that size.

I am so sorry you were not able to go. NL is alive and well according the the NL'ers that came to the Toronto Fodor's GTG-one current, one past (me). However, friends and family have advised me that the weather has been less than co-operative this year in both west and eastern NL, so maybe your year's delay is not all bad!

I just returned from a two-week driving trip to Newfoundland and Labrador/Quebec (the Lower North Shore). Yes, the rain made everything pretty soggy the first two weeks of August, but the trip was great! You will not find any friendlier people on earth than the Newfoundlanders.

I highly recommend the Bonne Esperance Heritage House B&B at 20 Gower Street in St. Johns. This a series of three beautifully restored Victorian row houses dating to the very early 20th century. The owner, Regina Anthony, is a most gracious hostess. The rooms are spotless, and the elegant breakfast is prepared by a chef and served by a trained staff. There are patios and a "fairyland" garden out back, and, should you require special arrangements, Regina is happy to oblige. (A family that was having a reunion arranged for a back yard barbecue one of the evenings I was there.) The rates are very reasonable, and give more than good value for the money.

And the Bonne Esperance Heritage House can easily accommodate a group of your size.

Clousie hopefully all will be well next year and you'll be able to make the trip. LJ is right about the weather ... July was wonderful and generally quite warm in most areas especially in Central and Western NL ... August not so ... rainy and below seasonal temperatures. But the sun is shining today and the weekend forecast is high 20's! With a little notice there are probably several places on the island that can accommodate your group and Bonne Esperance is certainly one to consider ... a lovely B&B in a great location in downtown St. John's.

Our trip to Newfoundland was by far one of our favorite respites from the US - we are winter travelers and although were warned about a January in the far North -- had no regrets! If you have not read, "The Day the World Came to Gander" please do, before your trip --
