Honeymoon in Canada. SUGGESTIONS?

Hello,

I am on a mission to find a great Canadian Honeymoon. We will be going for about 10 days and we love being outdoors (hiking, canoeing, and just about anything else). But we also want to be pampered a bit, but don't want to stay at the super touristy resorts, we're more of the B&B couple. We could drive (we live in Wisconsin) but were thinking about flying and renting a car. We have a budget of about 4K not including airfare (is this reasonable?).

I know you all have favorite places in mind- let me have it! All parts of Canada are on the table.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

I highly recommend Long Beach BC Between Tofino and Ucluelet.
Perfect for a honeymoon with everything you want for the outdoors. Here is a website for accommodation
http://www.bedsandbreakfasts.ca/tofino.htm There are many more options as well but this will give you an idea,

If you google Long Beach, Tofino, Pacific Rim National park etc you will find all the info you want as well as photos of this glorious area.
Congratulations on the wedding by the way.

If you are up for camping and canoeing, you should look at Killarney Park in Ontario. You can rent everything you need and the scenery is spectacular. My daughter and her husband did this in the summer and raved about it.

Don't head for Banff, Calgary, Lake louise, jasper..Although they are lovely spots the calgary Stampede will be during that time and the tourist season heavy and cost higher. my vote would be the west coast of Vanc. Island as traveller69 suggests.

Were I honeymooning in Canada, I would sooooooooooo favor Nova Scotia, but man, the many options in Canada are quite the array of good destinations.

Quebec City is a good one.

Montreal rates mention (or you could just say "Quebec" and include both)

Vancouver

The Canadian Rockies

Vancouver probably has everything, and the numerous cultures you can explore there while barely moving from the epicenter of downtown are enough to keep you going. You have water, you have mountains, and a truly fascinating society.

Probably wouldn't even need a car if you chose Vancouver. (maybe a one-day trip up to Whistler, or something)

There's just... something about Nova Scotia that keeps it highest on my list of suggestions despite my recalling these other places and trying to project myself on a honeymoon at each of them.

Nova Scotia's greatest appeal is that it isn't on the way to anywhere and thus it is kept rather quiet and filled with nature.

For pure natural beauty in NS you'll want to go to the northern 'island' of Cape Breton and specifically the Cabot Trail there.

Halifax makes for a great central backdrop, and I'd say it is a pretty neat sized city for a honeymoon (enhanced, again, by it not being on the way to anywhere - so not overrun by traffic or freeways).

A week in the area demands a trip over to Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick, for the impressive sights there. For hiking, "Cape Split" is a spot you'd likely find memorable and unique about your honeymoon, from decades in the future. Picturesque places like Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg would further enhance such a honeymoon, and you could add Pictou to those as well. Nearby Prince Edward Island is big for bicycle riding, if that strikes your fancy.

My absolute favorite curiosity about the whole area is the highest tides in the world in the Bay of Fundy!

Consider that, in the smallish area between Cape Split, NS and Parrsboro, NS (across the water)... as much water flows in 24 hours as flows through all of the rivers on earth - combined! - in the same 24 hours.

I wish I could recreate for your honeymoon the chance setting I once knew in (nearby) Moncton, New Brunswick, where as I sat outside on provided bleachers awaiting the "tidal bore" (when all the rivers in the area turn around and flow UPstream, on schedule, and because of the huge tides there), I was alone at 11:00pm with a full moon illuminating the river from the other side.

You can even go river rafting up stream !! in the area of the Bay of Fundy.

Nova Scotia is small enough, and not over-run by society, with plenty of nature and a bit of foreignness included.

I've been typing for a while here, and for the whole time my mind has been contemplating all of the choices in the background, and I just... can't say enough about Nova Scotia being the best of all I know about Canada.

If you're lucky... at the right time of the year... even the McDonald's restaurants serve up the McLobster sandwich... and, well, you won't find that in Winterpeg!

Congratulations on your nuptials (in advance?).

IF by chance this makes the "short list", then do yourselves the favor (favour) of ordering the "Doers and Dreamers Guide" from Nova Scotia tourism, just so you won't miss a beat there.

I live in Vancouver but as you love the outdoors so much I'd vote for Vancouver Island.

300 miles long/50 wide all kinds of things to see/do.

You could fly into Vancouver/stay a night then rent a car and head for the ferry all found.

Mountains, city parks and Ocean beaches- Vancouver and the surrounding area would be my top choice for an amazing honeymoon.Lots of choices to jump between outdoor adventures and spa delights, cool city restaraunts or quiet island sunsets. Enjoy.

Ditto for Long Beach in Tofino. Although you said you prefer B & B I highly recommend Long Beach Lodge Resort...very romantic rooms on the beach!

Drive to Winnipeg by way of Lake of the Woods.
Unless you want to drive across a lot of prarrie take the ViaRail Canadian from Winnipeg to Jasper. Rent a car in Jasper to go south on the Icefield Highway as far as Banff or Lake Louise. The Canadian Rockies are beautiful and there are great resort hotels in that area. With your budget you should be able to use a sleeper on the Canadian instead of coach.
The Canadian only runs 3 days per week so you will have to plan accordingly. If you went all the way to Vancouver, you might end up flying back home.

Thanks everyone!

I think we have decided on Vancouver Island. I look forward to many more Canadian trips to come, the idea of Nova Scotia seems quite charming. Thanks for the long and thoughtful note @NorthwestMale.

Cheers, Dave
