We just booked our entire trip thinking we could get into the Bear and Bison June 2007 only to find it is booked for June 7,8,9....any suggestions for an alternative? We are staying in Jasper and Field already and need something in this lower area....help.....

Wow stru lgr! that is a real bummer! I had my heart set on the Bear and Bison as well last January for a get-away-weekend with my daughter; but alas; they were booked solid. Mind you, I was not trying to book 9 months in advance like you; BUT; I guess the excellent reputation of the Bear & Bison is spreading rapidly. Anyway, I had to find an alternate and we were very happy with our "second choice".

If you would be happy with a B & B; may I recommend

Our hosts were amazing and their home is only a 10 - 15 minute walk from many wonderful restaurants in downtown Canmore. In addition, the most important issue for me was a quiet location (i.e. away from the train tracks). We stayed in a room in the back of the home and I had excellent sleeps!

If you require more info regarding restaurants etc, please repost.

I spent much of this weekend looking at lodgings in the Canadian Rockies! Here's the seven B&Bs in Canmore that I've narrowed it down to so far:

* Ambleside Lodge
* Bear Necessity
* Eagles Nest B&B
* Enchanted Forest
* Hidden Falls (mentioned by poster
above)
* Off Our Rockies
* Room With A View
These are places that are not in the middle of town, that seem reasonable and look nice. Good luck with your search! - Jill

Thanks so much to both of you. We have looked at Lady MacDonald...good reviews on Trip Advisor, but they are by the tracks...Peter said he has one room in the back that is quieter??!!! Sooooo your input was greatly appreciated...yes restaurant...or pubs as we like more informal eating places would be greatly helpful and appreciated.

My first dining recommendation would be

http://www.rockymountainflatbread.ca/

This fabulous restaurant is off the main drag and is mainly frequented by locals (be sure to make a reservation at night). Excellent, fresh, mostly organic foods, local ingredients, good service, good wine and some of the best handcrafted flatbread pizza I've ever had (but many other choices are available too).

Equally good and renowned is Crazyweed Kitchen, 626 Main Street. It's an eccentric mix of Asian, East Indian, Italian, Mediterranean and French. Again, you should go with a reservation.

For a pub atmosphere, we always enjoy

http://www.thegrizzlypaw.com/

good food, fun atmosphere, good selection of beers.......

Finally, we also had a great expereince at the Blue House Cafe, 637 Main Street. Contemporary Latin American cuisine with live music (often Flamenco) Thurs to Sun. It's a little more "casually elegant" than the above 3.........

The Creekside Country Inn is right next to Bear and Bison. Check into it (I can't recommend it since I have never stayed there...). Good Luck!

We just arrived at the Falcon Crest Lodge. Check it out on the internet. I would say it is darn good for the price. Good Luck
Thanks for the restaurant ideas I read above. We ate at the Grizzle. It is good not excellent. Not sure any place is fantastic.

we stayed at the Lady MacDonald last December and enjoyed it. The noise didn't bother us.. in fact I have a 5 year old facinated with trains and we only saw/heard a train once in the four nights we were there so he was quite disappointed! Try to get their 3 sisters room or the downstairs suite if possible... some of the other rooms seemed small to me... ok for one night but not if you're staying for awhile. I'm happy to answer specific questions if you have any.

We ate at Tapas which has not been mention here. It was very good. We only had 3 tapas together but we had filled up at Crazyweed for lunch.
At Tapas, it was Thursday night. The guitar player was very good. He offered a very nice touch.
Rocky MT Bagel was wonderful for breakfast. The bagel is easy to eat. You will not break you teeth on them. I wish we had bought a half dozen to eat during the day.

We ate at 2 excellent restaurants in Canmore last week. The Blue House Cafe has a south american theme with excellent seafood and Zona's is a funky bistro with great food.

Would highly suggest trying to get a reservation at The Paintbox Lodge in Canmore, a really beautiful place to stay, and it is within walking distance of all amenities. As for food, Crazyweed Kitchen is probably the best food in Canmore - have never been disappointed with a meal there (pricey though!). If you need a lunch spot, go to Muriettas - beautiful atmosphere with stunning views of the mountains. I agree with previous post of the Grizzly Paw being a great pub - good atmosphere with tasty food and they brew most of the beers on the premise. Hope this helps.
