Hi, Janet,
We are doing basically what you are wanting to do at around the same time. I have had the most amazing help from this forum and its very knowledgeable people. About the Rocky Mountaineer - we are doing that but on the Silverleaf level. It is expensive but it is also a 'once-in-a-lifetime' experience making it worth it in my book!
We are flying from Toronto to Calgary, staying a night then catching a bus to Jasper first. This means we go across the icefields twice but from the sounds of it this will be worth it. We stay in Jasper 2 nights, taking a tour to Lake Maligne and looking around Jasper for the rest of the time. Transfer again over the Icefields to Banff for 5 nights, taking a tour to Lake Louise and a couple of other sightseeing ventures. We board the Rocky Mountaineer on 3 October for Vancouver. Now, while in Vancouver we are staying on Vancouver Island in Victoria for one night - could have done with at least another one so your idea of 3 nights would be great. You will get to do a lot more than we will.
In total in the Vancouver region we stay for 6 nights - still not enough but unfortunately all we could take. I'll bump up my two postings - "Vancouver for a night and 2 days", and "How to get from Banff to Vancouver or Ontario". There is some great info in them but also check through the previous 3 x 25 posts as there are also a lot of posts with similar titles with very helpful info.
Good luck with your planning. I have thoroughly enjoyed mine and am so excited about our upcoming trip - even though it is still nearly 8 months away!
Dot
Janet, if you find Rocky Mountaineer too expensive try VIA Rail from Jasper to Vancouver. www.viarail.ca
I travelled this route two years ago and although you sleep on the train, I found it cost effective, good meals, service excellent.
