Getting from Quebec to Toronto

The train is probably the easiest way to get to Toronto from Quebec. Check out VIA rail. But it doesn't go to Niagara Falls, just to Toronto.
Then you'd have to make your way to Niagara Falls.
The best way to do that is to rent a car for the day out of Toronto.
If you were to rent a car from Quebec and drop it in Niagara Falls, it would most likely be very expensive.
The Falls is about 90 minute drive from Toronto.

One train, Quebec City to Montreal.
Montreal really is worth a day or two.
One train from Montreal to Toronto. Yes,. there is a train from Toronto to Niagara Falls, but you'd be much better off, as suggested, to rent a car.
You can either start and stop in Toronto and go to Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake for a day, returning at night, or stay overnight in either Nigara Falls or Niagara ont he lake.
There are car rental offices right inside the train station. Hertz for sure, plus others. Avis is across the street, I believe, in BCE Place.
The highway bus to Nigara Falls works well, too, and then you can take a local shuttle service.
Plus, there are lots of tours from Toronto to Niagara Falls to choose from.
Plane from QC to Toronto is quick but boring, and you'd miss Montreal.

Mothermary, I am also traveling from Quebec to Montreal in mid September. I have already bought a reserved seat for $48 CAD on the train. Quite reasonable.
I am renting a car from budget in Toronto for the drive to Niagara. This is for less than $50/day, cheap! Rent your car at the train station location, it is the only office open until 11 Pm and you can make the return in the same day.

Leaves... probably worth the trip out of town, especially if you come from somewhere that does not have this kind of leaves back home.
But if time is tight and you sttill have the rental car, just driving up the Don Valley Parkway from downtown Toronto can be spectacular.

Just adding a thought to BAK's answer on leaves. Agree that fall colour can be very worthwhile. But in mid to late September, a bit iffy, I think, in southern Ontario (i.e. between Montreal and Toronto). So far it's still too warm for any leaf change so I think we'd need a sudden significant cold snap to bring out much colour over the next couple of weeks.
If you have time, a better bet might be to try to swing a bit north on route between Montreal and Toronto, however that might add an extra day to your travels. Thinking of places like the Madawaska Highlands, the Haliburton Highlands, and Algonquin. Even there, no guarantee in mid September - although when we were in Algonquin 10 days ago a small hint of red was starting to show in the odd tree.

There was a big article about colours in last Saturday's paper. You could do an nice afternoon drive up to Forks of the Credit not too far north of Toronto.

Living in Miami I am "leaf peeping" deprived!
I will be in Quebec city Sept 13,14,15, Montreal 16,17,18,19 and Toronto 20,21,22,23,24, leave 25th. I am considering a drive to Mont Tremblant but I will only be in Montreal 4 days with lots to do.
What is a frustrated leaf peeper to do?

Thanks Kodi for all the info and good wishes you've sent along. We have decided on the VIA train. Understand there's probably not of scenery between the two points but has to be better than flying.
The only thing we have left to determine is what tour company to use in Toronto for the Niagara Falls trip. Not really interested in renting a car. Thanks again
