For Cdns travelling to the US by land or water as of Jan 31, 2008

Notice in today's papers from the Canadian government for Canadians travelling to the U.S.:

As of Jan 31, 2008, if you travel to the U.S. by land or water, a U.S. law will require you to present:

a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's licence; AND

a birth certificate or a citizenship card;

OR

for youth under 16, a birth certificate;

OR

a valid passport.

Canadian citizens FLYING to or through the U.S. must present a valid Canadian passport.

Actually this is news to me, as I've crossed the border by land in 2007 and I thought that a PASSPORT requirement was going to be set up for Jan. 2008. I thought the birth certificate/driver's license method of crossing the border was to be eliminated.

Thank you for the clarification, Sally!

Zevon, I merely reported that the Government of Canada chose to publish in daily newspapers yesterday.

Daniel, To muddy the waters a bit, I heard on the radio this moring, and I admit I was half-asleep, something about some special kind of drivers licence.

I meant to say "what" the Government of Canada chose to publish, not "that". Need coffee.
