Foodie Advice for Vancouver...Please!

So pleased to be on the Canada board which I don't think I've ever visited in all my years on Fodors
.
Well I've left this a bit late (we leave tomorrow) but I'm looking for some restaurant recommendations in Vancouver. essentially we have three nights there (first we have two in Whistler) and I'm looking for somewhere you'd recommend to friends. My friend who is at McGill haven't come through for me with her contacts so I'm throwing myself on you generosity!

We're meeting my brother and his wife there, plus a couple of British friends. I must confess I haven't done my due diligence but I'm certain Vancouver has a great dining scene. We are looking for at least one splash out meal, something modern, interesting etc and perhaps something more casual and/or an ethnic option.Living in the Bay Area we're spoilt with lots of good food at home. Quite a lot to ask I know, but I hope I can trade for previous trip reports or even an ongoing one on Colombia in the Latin America forum right now .

We're staying at the Rosewood Georgia, if the location helps inform anything and the exchange rate gives us some freedom on the pricing - with apologies to the Canadians.

Looking forward to seeing Vancouver, even in February! Thanks for any and all help.

It's been a few years, but since no one else has replied yet, my favorite restaurant of a week long trip was Vig:

Loved the food, and didn't even mind the no reservation policy because we enjoyed sitting outside on the patio and having a drink and eating free appetizers that were served there.

I didn't actually eat here, because it turned out I needed a reservation even for lunch, but it certainly looked interesting:

Thanks for the suggestions which I'll look up. They both look interesting and it's always fun to try these culinary school places.

We didn't really register that it's Valentine's weekend, so it will probably be places we CAN get into rather than where we might like to eat! VJs might work well as they don't take reservations.

sundriedtopepo - I appreciate your reply, nice to know I would have had suggestions had I been more organized and posted in time


In the end we ate close to the hotel and as I thought it was very much about where we could get in. I won't write a fullreport on the trip so I might as well give a few reviews here. We love the Rosewood Hotel Georgia which I would highly recommend, excellent service overall.

FOOD
On the first night we ate at Cinara which we liked very much farm to table food, well prepared in a very Brooklyn/East end of London/hipster venue. Friendly, well informed staff. There were six of us and everyone liked it. They also have an interesting cocktail menu.

The second night we had a fairly simple Thai meal at Sala Thai which we liked and made a nice change. On Valentines Day we ate at Hawksworth - one of the higher end options in town.

I'm not a fan of set menus on days like Valentines Day or NY Eve, if I'm at home we always avoid going out. I find the menus tend to veer towards the predictable and this was no exception, of course there was lobster and beef tenderloin. Each dish was very good individually, but I wasn't sold on the entire menu and I thought it was rather weak to use yuzu in both the amuse and the first course and then again in my husband's dessert! However, the food was well prepared and interesting, good textures and flavors, good service and an attractive room, though by Canadian standards it was very expensive.

However, we had breakfast everyday at Hawksworth which I very much enjoyed. I think going on a regular night for an a la carte meal would be much more satisfying and of course less crowded.

Hope this helps someone else heading to Vancouver....
