Food/Attractions/Campgrounds Just Off The Road in NB/NS en route to NL?

We are driving from Portland, ME to Sydney, NS next week to take the ferry to Newfoundland. We're splitting the 12 hour drive into 2 days and plan a detour to Cape Breton.

I've been as far north as Moncton and recall that most attractions were a hike from the highway.

Does anyone have any recommendations for food, campgrounds, or short hikes which are just off the road? We're taking NB-1, to the Trans Canada Hwy, and NS-104. If you know of any good bakeries or grocery stores, please tell!
