Feeling particularly dense about the Rockies

I have 13 days in July in the canadian rockies gaping in front of me and dang if I know what to do with them.

Allright, the particulars. Family of 4 with an active 8 & 10-year-old. We're outdoorsy people...not into tv/video games, etc. and we love hiking, canoeing, great meals and fishing.

Here's what my mind has been able to pull together so far:

Day 1: Land in Calgary, stay somewhere (because its Stampede, it's really hard but I'm on the verge of finding a place.)

Day 2- still Calgary (we have stampede tickets for those days)

Days 3-5 - Buffalo Mountain Lodge in Banff

Day 6 - now here is where it starts to fall apart. I'm thinking Jasper for Days 6, 7. 8.

Day 9 -12 - where do we go now?

Day 13- get back to calgary & fly out

Well, any parameter-shaping help very appreciated here.

Take a look at the suggestions posted here by Judy in Calgary, she is our expert.
I will add one of my favorite places to stay is at the Mount Engadine Lodge near Canmore. Take a look at it. Great for outdoor activity oriented folks.www.mountengadine.com

In addition to the Calgary Stampede, see if you can learn anything about small town rodeos. At these, you actually get to see the sweat on the horses.

And do you know about Drumheller and the dinosaurs?

Do you need to fly home from calgary, or can you arrange to drive through to Vancouver,a nd fly home from there. Lots in Vancouver that kids would enjoy, including beaches.

That "canada in x days' site is very helpful & I thank you cmcfong.

As far as catching a flight out of Vancouver, we can't because of the free ticket issue...but I guess I was wondering if we should drive further west than orginally planned (beause we do have extra days to play with).

Odd that Mount Engadine Lodge came up because I had just been researching that!

Since you are already on to it, I will elaborate. The place is relatively remote and you will have excellent wildlife viewing opportunities right on the grounds. Our typical day starts with an excellent breakfast, pack our lunches and head out for a great day of hiking. We manage to get back in time for tea (and the incredible apple strudel) then we like to sit on the deck and relax for a while. Dinner is a relaxed affair. Since we usually go in summer we have enough light for an after dinner walk. Great chances to see moose in particular. The hiking options are excellent. Just cannot recommend the place too highly. One caveat, the chef there for many years was killed in an avalanche and we have not been back since the new chef took over. Enjoy your visit. It is a gorgeous area.

Hi Judy, 12:30 on the 13th day (so, mid-day). And we would have to return a rent-a-car.

(fong, I'm emailing back & forth with the Mount Engadine Lodge folks right now.

Bak, I didn't know about the dinosaurs but am researching it now. thank you!

I'm sure I must be one of the Tyrrell Museum's biggest fans. I recommend it all the time. That's the museum that has the dinosaur skeletons.

Unfortunately it's so busy on July and August Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays that it really detracts from the experience. If you visit the museum in July and August, it helps to visit Monday through Thursday, when it is not quite so busy. If you must visit Friday through Sunday, it's best to go when the doors open at 9.00 a.m. or else wait till later in the day and go through the museum between 6.00 p.m. and 9.00 p.m.

Because the museum is in Drumheller and hence east of Calgary, it's best to go there before you set out for the mountains, which are to the west of Calgary, or else at the end of your trip when you in any case would be returning to Calgary to fly out.

Basically you need a day for the museum. Also, I feel you could use another day in the Banff / Lake Louise area.

Mount Engadine Lodge is in a great spot. However, I feel it may be better suited to repeat visitors to the area, such as cmcfong and bob_brown, whose posts you will find in other threads. I think that in your case, since you are first time visitors, there might be merit in looking at other alternatives.

Also, if you're interested in BAK's suggestion of visiting small town rodeos, I have a contact from whom I can find out what's going on in surrounding towns during the general Stampede timeframe. There you can see not only rodeo events but also musical rides that local teenagers do, and various other sports that are done on horseback. You can get up close and personal, and chat with the participants, etc.

If you want to e-mail me your travel dates, it would help me to make itinerary suggestions. It would help me to help you to figure out a better time to visit the Tyrrell Museum and, if you're interested in a small town rodeo, it would help me to help you figure that out too. If you e-mail me your arrival and departure dates, I won't splatter them all over the Internet. I'll just refer to Day 1, Day 2 and so on.

I'm about to leave for a volunteer activity, so it'll be tomorrow before I check for a response from you, if you feel like posting one or e-mailing one.

I wish I could rent a mini-van in Calgary & bring you all with me in the back seats! this is amazingly helpful.

Judy, we're flying out to calgary July 7 and returning mid-day on the 19th.

one thing about the Mount Engadine Lodge - it's kind of expensive ($160 per night adult, about $80 per child so that's $500 a night) but maybe I should sort of plan that as the big splurge for the trip? (it does include meals too).

The rooms at Mt. Engadine are basic, what you are paying for is location, view, access to hiking and wildlife, and a very special Canadian experience. My DH, a lovely man, but basically pennywise, agrees it is a must on any of our trips to the Canadian Rockies. We limit our stay to three or four nights, but it is wonderful. Our other favorite place, Lake O'Hara Lodge, is even more expensive...but IMHO worth every Canadian cent.

PS Garvin, if I weren't planning a great visit to Idaho at the very same time, I would take you up on that van!

Hi Garvin222,

I spoke with my colleague whose teenaged kids are on musical ride teams, etc. She said that, in the weekends leading up to the Calgary Stampede, there are rodeos in several small towns around Calgary (Millarville, Okotoks, High River, etc.). However, once the Calgary Stampede starts, everyone who is involved with the rodeo world moves to the Calgary Stampede. The only other nearby place where you can see equestrian events during the Calgary Stampede is Spruce Meadows, which is just to the south of Calgary and where there is show jumping.

With the rodeo calendar and your interests in mind, I suggest the following itinerary. Since you have mentioned your dates here, I feel free to quote them.

Fri 7 - Land in Calgary.

Sat 8 – Calgary Stampede.

Sun 9 – Stay on in Calgary, and go fishing on the Bow River. If you are keen anglers, the fishing in the Bow River in the general vicinity of Calgary is considerably better than the fishing in the mountains. The Bow River in and near Calgary apparently is considered to be a top notch river for trout. You’ll need a fishing licence, but you can purchase that through a sporting goods store from which you can rent rods or from an angling guide whom you might hire to take you fishing. Sorry, I don’t know any guides myself. If I was to search for one, I’d have to do what you probably would do. I’d use Google.

There is another reason to go fishing on this day. Visiting the Tyrrell Museum on this Sunday would be hell.

If you don’t want to fish, another place that I believe your kids would enjoy would be Heritage Park, which is a pioneer village in a southwestern residential district of Calgary.

Mon 10 – Visit the Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller. If you can extend your Calgary accommodation from 2 nights to 4 nights, you could do this as a day trip from Calgary. If it’s too difficult to find accommodation in Calgary, there would be merit in spending the night in Drumheller. There’s nothing really fancy in Drumheller, but I’ve heard that the Best Western Jurassic Inn is a comfortable place in which to stay.

Tue 11 – Drive to Jasper. If you start your trip from Drumheller, you can bypass Calgary’s traffic if you drive Drumheller – Beiseker – Airdrie – Cochrane (stop for ice creams from Mackay’s). After Cochrane, continue to Canmore, Banff, Lake Louise and on to Jasper.

See what you can of the sights along the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper. The minimal stops include Peyto Lake, the Columbia Icefields, Sunwapta Falls and Athabasca Falls. There are many hikes you can do from the Icefields Parkway. They include the one to Bow Glacier Falls and the shorter one to Parker Ridge. I don’t believe you’ll have time to do all of these things on this day. If you miss a couple of them on the way up, you can do them on the way back down.

More in next post.

Wed 12, Thu 13, Fri 14 – Jasper. I’m a bit torn about suggesting 4 nights / 3 full days in Jasper. While there is merit in that idea, and Jasper and its environs certainly could occupy that amount of time, there also would be merit in increasing your Lake Louise nights from 2 to 3 (but that would mean cutting your Jasper nights from 4 down to 3).

Sights and activities in the Jasper area include Maligne Canyon, Angel Glacier / Cavell Meadows hike, tramway up Whistlers Mountain (which is enhanced if you can do the extra little hike to the top of the mountain), a visit to Maligne Lake (perhaps with an optional cruise across the lake to Spirit Island), Mount Robson Provincial Park (to the west of Jasper National Park) and Miette Hot Springs (in the eastern part of Jasper National Park). You would really need 3 full days if you were to do any kind of justice to the places I’ve mentioned.

Sat 15 – Drive back down the Icefields Parkway to Lake Louise. You’ll probably have time to visit Moraine Lake (9 miles from Lake Louise) in the afternoon. Overnight in the Lake Louise area.

Sun 16 – Do a hike in the Lake Louise area. It would be nice if you also could include a visit to Takakkaw Falls and Emerald Lake in nearby Yoho National Park. If you don’t manage to see them on this day, you could see them the following day, before you continue to the Banff / Canmore area.

Mon 17 – From Lake Louise turn onto the Bow Valley Parkway (Hwy #1A) and visit Johnston Canyon. This parking lot really fills up, so it’s good to go there earlier rather than later. Walk to the Lower Falls at least. If you want to make a hike of it, and leave the crowds behind you, carry on walking to the Upper Falls, and then hike to the Ink Pots. The hike from the Upper Falls to the Ink Pots goes through a forest, so you don’t see much scenery while you’re walking. However, you eventually emerge from the forest into a lovely alpine meadow. If you choose to do this hike, I suggest picking up take-away lunches from Laggan’s Bakery and Deli before you leave Lake Louise village.

After that you might enjoy going up Sulphur Mountain gondola, just outside of Banff townsite. You might also enjoy a bit of a stroll through the town of Banff.

If you have managed to secure reservations at Mount Engadine Lodge, continue there for the night. Otherwise you could stay in Banff townsite or Canmore.

Tue 18 – From your base at Mount Engadine Lodge, explore Kananaskis Country.

Wed 19 – Drive to Calgary and fly out. Since you’ll be flying to the United States, you’ll need to clear U.S. immigration and customs at Calgary Airport, and you’ll need to check in 2 hours before take off. Don’t try to skimp on your check in time. To be on the safe side, I would assume 2 hours for the drive from Mount Engadine Lodge (which is a bit of overkill, but I hate to feel as if I’m down to the wire) plus 2 hours for check in. So I would leave Mount Engadine Lodge 4 hours before take off. There is a gas station just as you approach the airport, so you can fill up your rental car before turning it in.

I forgot to mention specific places at which you could canoe. It would be easy to fit this into your visits to one of several lakes at which canoes are available for rent, e.g., Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, Emerald Lake, etc.

I believe that, after you’ve completed the Calgary / Drumheller portion of your trip, it makes sense to go all the way up to Jasper and then work your way back down to Calgary for your flight home.

Hope that helps.

Dinosaurs? Go to Drumheller and/or Dinosaur Provincial Park. Drumheller can be done as an easy day trip from Calgary. The museum has a great educational program aimed at youngsters.
We saw one on the Creatures of the Burgess Shale with scale models about 1,000 times larger than life that responded to untra violet light.
The figures were shown with a play-skit presentation that had been well rehearsed and was technically accurate.

Mt.Engadine Lodge? We stayed there 4 nights last year. There was a family gathering while we were there that included quite a few children.

They entertained themselves with games on the rug in the lodge and in the big hot tub. I presume they did other things, but we were also visiting other attractions, so I don't know what all they did.

The lodge overlooks a meadow with moose on call at dusk. Hiking trails are around there, too, because the mountains are in front of you.

I know Judy gave you a detailed trip plan. Her knowledge is quite extensive, and I, too, have my own favorite spots.

For example, a view of the Yoho Valley from the Iceline Trail is worth the exertion to get up there.

And somewhere let me suggest that you crank Lake Louise and Moraine Lake into your thinking. And Kootenay Park, just over the Great Divide from Banff Park has some nice places to visit, particularly if the bridges around Marble Canyon have been put back since the forest fires. (Closed last year because of bridge damage.)

I think you also need to factor in that driving the Icefields Parkway can be an all day affair. For me, it is a two day affair. One day up, with side hikes, and one day back to see what I bypassed on the way up.

Wanted to let you all know that I'm 80% planned with this trip thanks to these great suggestions....I'm booked at lodges recommended by you all....and driving the routes recommended....really, it's a Fodors Forum trip the whole way.

Only big issue I have left is the first 2 nights in Calgary because the crazy stampede thing is going on at the same time (and we have tickets as well) but I"ve got my fishing line out & hope to catch a room soon! thanks again for all of the help.

For heaven's sake... the WEST EDMONTON MALL is something that 8 and 10 year olds would love!!

www.westedmall.com

Edmonton = 180-ish miles north of Calgary on FAST and uncluttered roads all the way.

That's the biggest tourist attraction in the area.
