Fall weather in Nova Scotia & PEI

I posted a prior message for my trip on October 6th-14th. I have been advised that alot of places are closed by the end of Sept. I would appreciate any suggestions on
the travel routes from Halifax to PEI during early October. There are so many quaint towns and places we would like to see. Iam unfamiliar of the weather conditions in different locations, and what accomodations are closed during early October (for example on the Lighthouse trail and etc) From my reading Cape Breton is a must...thanks for the help.
paulette

The weather in october is cool. Cold in the morning, nice by noon, and cools off again at night. I would bring warm clothes! But also bring a few cooler clothes too, because you never know.

Some things do close at the end of Sept., but I wouldn't worry about it. Most of the well-known places travelled by tourists are open year-round. And it will still be scenic even if some of the giftshops have closed.

Cape Breton is supposed to be beautiful in the fall, but there isn't a lot to do other than look at the scenery, although many people love doping this. Louisburg in Sydney Cape Breton is worth a visit.

Consider taking the Ferry to PEI from Pictou and then come back via the bridge at the other side of the island.

Send away for a Nova Scotia Doers and Dreamers Guide. It has absolutely everything. Follow their advice and you will be sure to see everything. You can get one by contacting a NS tourist info. bureau.

Dear Paulette; We went to Nova Scotia/PEI about the same time last year. It rained about every third day but we were in transit on those days so it didn't ruin our trip. Temps are in the 60s but cooler along the breezy coast. I brought a leather jacket and a wool cap and felt very comfortable.

I echo Bill's comments about the ferry/bridge, but do it in reverse. Take the bridge to the island (free) but take the ferry back.

Cape Breton is a must--better than the lower half of NS. Stay in Baddeck, centrally located to Cabot Trail and Louisbourg.

Memorable places along the way:
Fall foliage--everywhere!
Lobster Treat and Fresco's Trattoria--Antigonish
New Glasgow Lobster Suppers, New London Seafood Restaurant--PEI
Barachois Inn--PEI
Inverary Resort, Duffus House--Baddeck

Have fun!

Fall is actually a prime tourist time, so most attractions and accommodations are open at least until the end of October (go to the provincial government websites and order their travel guides--Nova Scotia is www.gov.ns.ca and PEI is www.gov.pe.ca). The Celtic Colours International Festival is held in the first two weeks of October all over Cape Breton. It's a must if you like Celtic music, but accommodations will fill up, so you'll have to book.

Check the Nova Scotia government home page before you leave for LeafWatch--observers around the province report on the fall colours.
