Empress Hotel

I had planned to stay one night at the Empress to give my mother a stay in an old "grand hotel." Searching the forum I didn't find anyone who stayed there and one person who said a friend was disappointed with their room (they do have standard and deluxe). Any firsthand advice?

We live in Victoria so haven't actually stayed overnight at the Empress. They did a major renovation a few years ago so there are the "old" rooms, with high ceilings that you would find in an older hotel (but with water views) and a new section that has more modern type hotel rooms. It is, of course, centrally located and the atmosphere is, well...probably worth the cost.

I haven't stayed there either. But even if you don't, your Mother would probably enjoy afternoon tea there. We have found the service quite good on our last two visits (wasn't always so). She may also enjoy one of the little ferry trips from the harbour:

I don't know if it's still on, but I believe they used to do a water "ballet" on Sunday mornings. It was really cute. Or perhaps she'd enjoy a horse carriage ride, a stroll though Beacon Hill Park, a drive through the uplands, or just shopping downtown. One of my favourite places is Hatley Park where Hatley Castle is situated. It was built by the family who also owned Craigdarroch Castle, but is on much grander grounds. It's a fair way out of town though.

We have stayed at the Empress many times, and love it. If you are looking for an old "grand hotel", this is it. The rooms are nicely furnished, and the ones at the front have great views of the harbor (which usually has lots of entertainers at night). Don't miss having "tea" at the Empress. They serve it in several different locations on the main floor. Reservations are a good idea. I have heard that the dining room at the Empress is also good, but our favorite restaurant in Victoria is Pablo's (Continental Cuisine), a couple blocks behind the Parliment Building. Have a fun time.

We stayed one night in the Empress last week and were very pleased! Through their internet site and via email, we arranged a "bed & breakfast" rate of $179 Canadian (about $125 US). The room was small but very nice. The breakfast was a full buffet which normally costs $19 Canadian. We also did "High Tea" and it was fine. However, the price has increased! The current Fordor's book says the price is $21, but it is now $35! But, wives love it!
