I'll be driving from eastern Maine to Waterton/Glacier park and Banff in August, then heading back east thru the SW US. Any suggestions relative to merits of driving west across Canada or the northern tier of US states.

You really have asked a very general question. Traveling by car or RV ?
I am in B.C. Banff, Alberta has lots of places to stay - hotels and RV sites. If you choose to be in BC the first Monday of August - book ahead it is one of our busiest long holiday weekends. Not really sure what you want to know. Ask a few more specific questions. Trans Canada is a good highway not really a freeway, except near Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver. Canada has good paved roads and highways unless you are going north to Alaska.
Going back through SW USA I 5 is good all the way down towards LA county.
Your dollar will go much further in Canada, if you want to stay at upper-middle and high priced hotels.Gas willcost much more in Canada, even taking the exchange rate into consideration. Toronto to Thunder Bay is a long drive, and as dull as driving near Bangor.
If you have enough time, drive to Montreal, Ottawa, then down towards Toronto, and on to Windsor/Detroit. Then hit Chicago and begin to angle north-west, crossing into Canada in southern Saskatchewan. Then go west as far as Calgary and then over to Banff before turning south. If you have time, continue west, in British Columbia, to Vancouver, and then head south through Seattle.
BAK
A couple summers I drove from Saskatchewan down to Ontario within Canada, and returned from Niagara Falls through the northern states. It might be un-Canadian, but the roads tend to be far better on the U.S. route!
