Drive to Whistler from Vancouver

We will be in Vancouver this month for 4 days. How long does it take to drive to Whistler? I've heard it is quite beautiful. However, we only have half a day.

From downtown Vancouver is takes about an hour and a half to two hours. From the suburbs it obviously takes longer.

The last time I was in Whistler was in 1998, and I spent half a day there. It's definitely doable.

I would do it. It's a lovely drive even if you go, turn right around and come back. It took me about two hours each way.

But don't turn right around. Take an hour or two to stroll through the village and maybe have lunch at one of the dozens of really good restaurants there.

I'd drive up, but only halfway up. As soon as the spectacular Sea to Sky Highway turns inland, I'd be on my way back to Vancouver.
Whistler may be great in winter, but in summer it's a disappointment. Not very scenic and plenty of expensive stores. If you must go up and have lunch, try the Rimrock Cafe. It's expensive but has world class cuisine. Otherwise, there are tons of restaurants around to choose from and you can pretend you are just like the others - a forlorn and lost winter ski bum wandering around waiting for the snow to return. Have fun!

Maggie, that's one of the most absurd posts I've ever read on this board. Whistler only for the winter? There are now almost as many tourists there in the summer as in winter for good reason. Great hiking trails, beautiful lakes, good nightlife, majestic mountains, fantastic mountainbiking. If you don't like nature then that's one thing, but if you're the outdoors type there is just as much to see and do in Whistler in the summer as the winter.

I agree with Dan 100% and would like to add that the area has some great trout fishing as well.
Anyone who is bored in Whistler in Summer is insulting themselves.

I disagree that Whistler isn't scenic in the summer. Perhaps during a grey, rainy day things might not be as wonderful as on a clear, sunny day... but you also have to leave the village to experience the wilderness and nature.
To prove it, I have some photos my family took during our July 1992 weekend in Whistler...

http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/.110...cle/211/5/?s=O

Carl, We are interested in the trout fishing in the Whistler area; can you provide some additional info?

We drove from Vancouver to Whistler at the beginning of our holiday. Its a great drive. Stop at Horseshoe Bay, very pretty, good fish and chips. Also keep an eye out for a large waterfall on the right hand side of the road. Cant remember the name, but it started with S. Well signposted and parking area with a short walk to the falls. Big and impressive esp after rain. We saw our first bears about half way to Whistler. A mother and 2 cubs just off the road. Not at all shy and posed for us for about 15 minutes.

Definitely don't miss Shannon Falls. It doesn't take long and is great. If you only have half a day you are not going to have time to enjoy anything but the drive and maybe a quick meal.

I agree with Whistler being so beautiful in the summer, went last weekend for 1 day and night and now i wish i would have decided to go there for a week than mexico (Cancun) where i just came back from (very hot and humid) beginning of July, Next year definetly will spend a week there, beautiful lakes, bike trails, hiking, spectacular scenery and not too far to drive.
