Divorce Proceedings ?

Suggestions please for couple in late 50’s for 14 to 17 days in North America in 2013
(probably around September to November)
LOVES: Outstanding Scenery, Scenic Drives (Lakes and/or Ocean, Colours [Leaf-peeping?] Mountains,)
LIKES: NP’s, Wildlife, Sight-seeing, Culture
DISLIKES: Beach holidays - Anywhere extremely hot, Hiking, (indeed TOO much walking seems out of the question)
£££
We fly economy, usually staying in 3* or perhaps 4* accommodation,

Places visited in past:
Vancouver, Canadian Rockies, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Manhattan, Washington DC, San Diego, San Francisco,
(Other: Scottish Highlands, Yorkshire Dales, Lake District (UK), Norfolk Broads, Austrian Tyrol, Cotswolds, Cornwall, Dordogne, Paris, Amsterdam)

Why ‘Divorce Proceedings’?
‘cause if I don’t start arranging our long haul holiday for next year soon there’s a possibility we could be spending our hard-earned cash on just that!
In all seriousness, I need to get the time booked with work well in advance, and I thought the subject was more eye-catching.

Considering what you have already seen, try flying to Las Vegas and renting a car. Go to Hoover Dam, Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Capitol Reef NP (via Route 12), Goblin Valley SP, Arches NP and Canyonlands NP (Island in the Sky).
If you have more time left, visit Death Valley NP if it is not too hot (Artists Drive).
When you get back to Las Vegas, if you still want a divorce, that can be arranged.

Consider New York State... Niagara falls, Lake Ontario, Letchworth State park, The Finger Lakes, Hudson Valley, all world class Natural attractions...

Mexico is in North America and the joys of Mexico City are a complete unknown to most people-it certainly beats the pants off any of the previously posted suggestions.

Have you considered the east coast of Canada?...Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and maybe Newfoundland if time allows...September or October would be best especially for leaf peeping...There is definitely outstanding scenery and scenic drives with very little hiking involved.

I'd second jannieween's suggestion to look into the east coast. I did the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton Fall '11 and loved it and then drove down to Halifax.

It does fit many of your Love/Like categories and I'd nominate it for your consideration

And here is a 3rd vote for Nova Scotia (Cape Breton and also the South Shore-Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Fabulous scenery, wonderful hospitality and you will find it a bargain compared to Europe/UK and large cities in the US.

As to timing, summer is marvelous and not usually TOO hot-but October would also offer you that leaf-peeping experience you mentioned and both this October and last were glorious, with extended Indian Summers.
