I am trying to get from Montreal back to Burlington Airport Vermont by public transport and having great difficulty working out an "easy" way. I have done lots of searching but not coming up with any definitive answers. The Greyhound bus has been mentioned but then people have commented that it takes for ever with the border crossing and Greyhound is unreliable. Is this the case! The train has also been mentioned but again without much conviction, has anyone done either of these and can you recommend one over the other or another method? It is a one way journey so a hire car is not an option. I am neither American or Candian, I am coming from Aus via Europe. I am discovering public transport is rather difficult. I think flying would be very expensive. Any help/ideas would be most welcome.

It does not take "forever" at the border.
What is your hurry to cross the border?

No hurry but I have read it can take several hours. But of course this could be completely wrong which I why I am asking if anyone has had a recent experience.

As a rule I don't take public transit, but my ski club has two cross border trips every season.

They send the passenger manifest to the border crossing ahead of time, I assume that Greyhound does the same.

The border agents know who is coming, the bus will cross the border in time to allow it to maintain a schedule.

I must say I an surprised at what you have heard about Greyhound. My wife and children are regular users and find the service completely reliable. They don't cross the border but I really doubt that will be an issue unless you are crossing at a particularly busy time.

I googled greyhound border crossing and yes it does seem that one or two people can delay a bus. But you can find complaints about Santa Claus on the Internet so I wonder how serious the problem is.

A bus heading to the airport would hopefully be full of people with the required documentation.

I take back the last point as it doesn't look like the bus is only going to the airport.

There sure are a lot of fascinating people on the Internet. I've missed most of the Manchester-Manchester football game reading all sorts of fascinating stories.

Hi schanuzer,

I've taken the Greyhound bus a few times from Montreal to Boston (stopping in Burlington); the border crossing takes a bit of time as they process all the passengers on the bus, but not too bad in my experience. From Montreal, if my recollection serves me right, it's been about 2 hours to Burlington if you do it by bus.

Thanks Cold and Daniel, it sounds like the complaints may be a storm in a tea cup. Yes, Cold I have seen that link but it was on further searching I came across the negative comments. I will allow plenty of time, and I am not actually catching a plane but being picked up to go walking. I will search further and see if it drops off in down town as I am now staying a night or two in Burlington before the walk. In fact I may put out a call to see if anyone wants to join the walk....thanks again for giving me more confidence. Schnauzer

Schnauzer enjoy downtown Burlington if you get there. Great pedestrian mall downtown and a big university town. Culinary school grads make it easy to find good food and Lake Champlain boardwalk a lovely stroll. Spent a week there as a base for cycling in vermont so know if you love outdoors, it will be great.
