Deer Lake, Newfoundland suggestions.

We will overnight in Deer Lake, planning to head out to Gros Morne the next morning. May I have suggestions for dinner and breakfast, please? I. would like to pick up beer and picnic supplies, can you recommend a grocery store?
thank you.

Oh dear! Is there any way that you can stay in Gros Morne instead of Deer Lake for the first night? Three years ago we stayed overnight in Deer Lake, and the B&B recommended Jungle Jim's, the Canton and the Irving Truck Stop on the TCH (in that order). We chose Jungle Jim's and it was without doubt the worst restaurant I have ever eaten in.

There are some fast food restaurants on the highway, but no Macdonalds or Tim Hortons where you can get a decent breakfast.

Unfortunately, for reasons out of my control I will be staying overnight in Deer Lake later this month and I would certainly welcome suggestions from Fodorites for a decent place to eat. In my visits to Newfoundland, I have rarely had a bad meal, but Jungle Jim's was spectacularly bad--the food, the service, and the ambiance.

Can't help you with groceries, but I'm sure you will find something. Don't expect a large supermarket.

Hello again, cmcfong. I can't help with restaurants in Deer lake, but I have been looking for a grocery store for our trip in September and thought the best candidate would be Colemans Grocery & Liquor Store,1 Pennells Lane in Deer Lake. Here's their web site, which looks encouraging: www.colemans.ca

One thing for sure: there isn't much choice for groceries in Rocky Harbour, although there is a liquor store.

Thank you so much, Anselm. That is just what I needed.
Laverendrye, we were told not to drive that road at night because of moose activity. We arrive fairly late in the evening and will overnight at the Holiday Inn Select, which is rated as clean on TA. We won't go to Jungle Jim's, thanks for the warning.
