Chicago to London, ON, Canada

We're looking into driving to London, Ontario in August for about a week.

Looking for places to stop along the way (probably drive thru Kalamazoo and Flint, MI), but more important — day-trips from London, no specific interests, just interesting places...

Thanks!

See if you can get hold of “The top 125 Unusual Things to See in Ontario” by Ron Brown, published by The Boston Mills Press. It lists about 25 sites within an hour or two of London. Each site has a full page description and full page photo that describes a point of interest that gives a fascinating insight into the history of this part of the world. Nothing so spectacular that it attracts hordes or tourists, just the sort of thing you could enjoy on a leisurely drive on a summer’s day. Examples: “Ontario’s longest Small Town Train Station”, or “The Telltale Grave”, or “The Ghost Squirrels of Exeter”

Also you will want to visit the Lake Erie beaches. Water will be warm by August.

You mean The top 115 Unusual Things.... Not 125. I found the book, will get it at the local library. Thanks!

More ideas? welcome!

Mine is The Top 125. Later edition, maybe? Glad you found it and hope it adds to the enjoyment of your travels.

I would recommend a day trip to Point Pelee National Park. Very peaceful and beautiful. We were just there on Sunday; even though it was the weekend of Canada Day/4th of July and the weather was beautiful, it wasn't crowded at all. We really enjoyed the boardwalk in the marsh, and especially enjoyed visiting the tip--the southernmost point of mainland Canada. You could even take the ferry to Point Pelee Island from Leamington, but we didn't do that.

We also visited some of the wineries along Lake Erie near Kingsville. Lots of fun.

About 30 miles north of Flint is Frankenmuth - a town dedicated to Xmas!

I'll second the vote for Frankenmuth. And if you love Christmas, a visit to Bronner's is definitely in order.

Thanks so much guys. Not sure why, but this forum does not email me notofications when someone responds... Is there a way to correct it?

I got the book thru our local library (Top 115, it's a 2012 edition, but it's fine), and I will look into your other suggestions this weekend.

Still 2.5 weeks before we leave, so more ideas would be appreciated....

mamamia2 - the forum doesn't currently offer that feature - perhaps the new owners will add it.

Have a great trip.
