Canadian Rodeo in early to mid July --- somewhere near Montreal or Ontario?
Hi Canadians!
We'd love to go to a rodeo this summer while we are on our Canadian travels! Actually, anything that we might not do in the States (or Netherlands where the inlaws are coming from) would be fun for us.
I've found a rodeo in Labrecque (all info in French so trying to wade through) but have no idea where it even is and would love ideas if anyone has them. We do not want to do the normal tourst things the entire trip and really want to experience the normal life in Canada (Niagara on the Lake area - vineyards), Montreal area and week on a lake west of Kingston.
Thanks so much!

I didn't know where Labrecque is either but Google and Wikipedia helped. This town of 1,200, all Francophones, is located in the Saguenay-Lac St-Jean region substantially northeast of Quebec City. The Saguenay, by reputation, is a highly scenic river and the area is known for forestry and cheese-making among other things. Rodeo is not one of those other things. Traditionally in Quebec the horse was valued for pulling ploughs and, more heroically, mighty logs out of the forests. Bucking broncs and cattle-roping are activities of the Canadian prairies out west.
Although there are horse shows in the east, they are for show only. But along with a sturdy enthusiasm for country music, rural Quebec seems to have a taste for dressing up like cowboys (YouTube turned up a video with French yodelling.) Here is a list of shows calling themselves rodeos for the province http://acecrodeo.com/07-rodeos.php?lang=ang
And for the Saguenay http://www.saguenaylacsaintjean.ca/en/
More generally, Montreal has lots of things to do year-round and Quebec City, walled like in old Europe, is quaint for kids and adults alike. Both cities have active tourist agencies on-line.

I was intrigued by this question and out of curiosity did a search. It took only a few seconds to find out that there is a rodeo circuit in Ontario and that there will be 8 rodeos in southern Ontario this summer.

They certainly won't be the Calgary Stampede, but it might be fun to attend one.

The Spencerville rodeo is in Spencerville Ontario just off the 401 between Toronto and Montreal, enroute to Ottawa. It is a great little rodeo, loads of fun and friendly people. This year is held the weekend of July 28. While its not the Calgary stampeded, its actually alot more fun as you are nearer the action (and I come from Calgary and have been to many rodeos).
In your travels, try to get to Ottawa. Often overlooked it is a great city with lots of fun things to do and see. Great bike paths touring by bicycle is the best way to really enjoy Ottawa, the capital of Canada, like we residents do.We love biking along our Rideau canal and have over 50 miles of bike paths. Bike rentals are easy and inexpensive. Also, the thousand islands area just south of us and Upper Canada village are lots of fun to see and experience.
