Canada Day experience
Was wondering what Canada Day celebrations are like? Are thing really spread out around Ottawa or will we be able to park in one location and get around with the 1 and 3 yr old in a stroller?
I keep checking back for an updated list of activities but they still don't have things scheduled yet!

This year's festivities will be starting as early as 9 a.m. and ending with a display of fireworks on Parliament Hill around 10 p.m. The day promises to be filled with outdoor music concerts, entertaining buskers and several vendors in various downtown Ottawa sites:
* Major’s Hill Park: Musical Currents from Coast to Coast
* Jacques-Cartier Park: Canada’s Emerging talents!
* Parliament Hill : Celebration in Motion!
* Confederation Park: Free admission to Ottawa Jazz Festival to Celebrate Canada Day and Family Day on July 1

Most of the events are in the core of Ottawa or just across the river in Gatineau. You can certainly walk easily between Parliament Hill, Major's Hill Park and Confederation Park. Jacques Cartier Park is about a ten minute walk across the Alexandra Bridge from Major's Hill Park.
Much of downtown Ottawa will be closed to traffic on Canada Day, so you will have to walk. In past years, there have been shuttle buses between the major sites as well.
The NCC should publish the list of events by early June.

It is hard to gauge distances! Thanks! We are staying at the Hilton in Gatineau --what is probably our best bet for getting to the festivities? We don't mind walking within reason or do they have water shuttles or bus shuttles across the bridge?

You won't want to walk downtown from the Hilton, so your best bet would be to take a bus. There will be so many streets closed in both Ottawa and Gatineau that taking a car downtown would be problematic.
From the Hilton, you would take an Outaouais bus (STO). As the Hilton is adjacent to the Casino, there will be lots of buses there at all hours. Ask the hotel which one would be best, as the holiday schedule will probably be different from the regular. You can consult their service here: http://www.sto.ca/index_e.asp
Although it isn't out yet for this year, last year's announcement of street closures will give you an idea of what the downtown in both Gatineau-Hull and Ottawa will be like. There's also information on the shuttle bus service (there are no water shuttles--maybe sometime in the future). You'll need a street map to make sense of it, but closer to the day the Ottawa Citizen will publish detailed maps of the closures.

oh wow! Thanks so much for your help! This really helps in planning for the day and not getting frustrated at the last minute-which I am sure would have happened that morning of Canada Day.
