Hi,
We'll be taking our 2 and 6 yrs old children to see the Fall colors of New England from Oct 11-24. We'll fly in and out of Boston. I was browsing through the forum today and read some trip postings about Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. P.E.I. peaked my interest. My 6 yr old LOVES Ann of green gables. We already have a pretty full week between Boston and North Conway areas and the NH coast. How is P.E.I around the Oct 18-23 time frame? Will it be too rushed to get that far up north? The kids won't be up for long drives. Are there interesting places to stop along the way? Thanks.
Boston to P.E.I.

Its about 500 miles from Boston to Charlottetown, PEI. I don't know if that puts you right off, or if you want more info?
There are interesting places to stop en route, but lets not go there if the initial info is off-putting.
It might help to know where home is? how different is this country-side when the main attraction of PEI (the fabulous beaches) will be chilly and damp and the fall colours will not likely hold the interest of the average 6 year old for more than 2 minutes!
Home is San Francisco. The distance itself is not off putting if we can stop at interesting places along the way to walk around, maybe stay somewhere overnight.
Okay...the bad news is that your schedule means that you are 1 week too late to take the CAT ferry from Maine to NS, leaving you with a drive of 650 rather than 500 miles.
The good news is that there is a good alternative route that leaves you with someting interesting to do on the way.
Personally, I would be inclined to head (via Bangor, Maine)for St. John (New Brunswick) or environs for the first night and check out the tides along the Fundy shore. St. Andrews-by-the-Sea is a nice small town a bit south of St. John, easily doable and very attractive.
Then on to PEI via the bridge the next day. The drive is not spectacular, all multi-lane Transcanada super-highway, though the trees in full colour will make it a bit more interesting.
I will leave others to fill in the blanks on PEI in October: like I said, apart from Anne of GG and the lobster, the big draw to PEI is golf and its undisturbed pastoral quality with those beaches, not so appealing that time of year...but, who knows? you could get lucky with weather and behold an Indian Summer in all its blue and gold spendour!
Happy planning!
