Best time of year and place for salmon fishing

Hello. We recently came back from a trip to Alaska where we had a wonderful time on the Kenai River fishng for Sockeye salmon, and limited every day. We are thinking of coming up to Canada next and want to have another wonderful experience. I guess the first question is do the salmon runs in Canada rival the ones in Alaska? We would want to fish for either sockeye or silvers. Prefer rivers and freshwater to ocean fishing. Any recommendation on the very best places to fish for salmon and the best times of year for the hit the runs at their peak?

I have fished off Uclulet (Vancouver Island) in the summer time. It was AMAZING. It was ocean fishing and a total rush. The entire boat (4 of us) all caught our limit. Then we caught some halibut... not as fun but just as tasty.

Admittedly this is ocean fishing rather than river, but we live in Sooke and there are lots of fishing charters nearby. In August I took my family fishing (they were visiting from Ontario) and we caught 21 nice big salmon in about 4 hours. Most of them were pinks, but we got one gorgeous sockeye.

The Fraser River and its tributaries just outside of Vancouver... look up Great River Fishing Adventures.

I just read the sadest article in the San Francisco Chronicle website an hour ago regarding the salmon in BC. Here is the article:

Thanks for the replies. We really prefer river or lake fishing to ocean. I'll look into Fraser River. Thanks for the help.

My step son lives in Terrace BC and is an AVID fisherman. He takes his vacation in September every year when the coho and steelhead are abundant. Here is a website (part of the Hello BC webpage) that may be of interest to you

Hi!

Look out towards Kamloops, Cranbrook, Kelowna and into Golden B.C. and the Canadian Rockies if you prefer lake fishing.

If you want to fish for salmon, there is some amazing fishing around the Gulf Islands (Canada's San Juans - all same island chain, different country), such as Pender Island, Gabriola Island with regular ferry service; I grew up watching fishing boats out of Silva Bay on Gabriola. It is ocean fishing with salmon, and many little inlets, harbors that are calm and protected. You could also look at Princess Louisa Inlet or the Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii out of Queen Charlotte City.

If you want river fishing try the Stamp river in September. Ocean fishing is better and there are places and times to fish in protected water. You can check out http://www.salmoneye.net/gallery/ for pics on what you can expect if fishing on the west coast. If you like flyfishing you can try the mouth of Nile Creek just north of Qualicum in August and September for pinks and coho.
