never been to montreal. husband and i of 40 yrs plan to stay for 2-3 days this summer. in what area of montreal should we be looking for a hotel. how far is montreal from niagara falls. thank you

The neighborhood question comes up frequently - scan back on this forum for lots of feedback. There are 3 basic areas I would consider best for vacationers: The downtown, which is much like any big city but with a French twist: the Old City which is very charming and touristy; and the Plateau which is the most 'european' feeling, with lots of small cafes, byob's and shops. I personally prefer the Plateau, but I would have no problem staying in any of these areas.
They are all within a few minutes via the Metro.

thx all. montreal seems to be a longer trip from niagara falls than we wanted to make by car. can you suggest a more nearby town to niagara falls that would be quaint with a european feeling. the plateau area of montreal sounds like what we are looking for, but too far to go.

You might consider Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Niagara Wine Region as an alternative... from April thru October NOTL hosts the Shaw Festival with four theatre venues and several play selections... a european style hotel is the Prince of Wales in the village... you can also tour any of the 60 wineries... if thats not your style, theres also Stratford... or several areas of Toronto that have old world charm...


With that said, also consider leaving your car in Niagara and take the train to Montreal... its an adventure and you can also take it at night and get a sleeper car...
