BC ferry trip w/Rockies

I have a couple of weeks to visit British Columbia. I want to tour the Rockies by auto, but would also like to take a short trip in the Inside Passage.
I was thinking of a ferry trip from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert, but that makes for a LONG trip back to the Jasper/Banff parks.
If I take a ferry from Port Hardy to Bella Coola, are the roads (especially hwy 20) back to the the Jasper/Banff area suitable and a better option to save miles over a drive from Prince Rupert?
(Hwy 20 shows up as a small road on my map program. Is it even paved?)

Any other suggestions related to including a day or two Inside Passage trip in connection to visiting BC? I've never visited Canada before.
