April/May 2010 Vancouver island/alaska. suggested itinerarys please

Hi. We are getting married on April 17th 2010. We hope to leave Ireland on april 19th and to spend a few days in Vancouver and then go to Alaska until mid May. From feedback on this site though it has been suggested that Vancouver island might have better weather in late Aprl than Alaska.
we both like the outdorrs-walking, cycling, kayaking etc. (not fishing or golf fans!)
We were thinking of maybe spending more time in Vancouver Island and head to alaska early May.
Of course we would like to maybe relax for a few days too.like the idea of a log cabin, hot springs etc
i was just wondering if anyone has any recommended itinerarys or any "must sees or dos"
It looks like our best flight options from Dublin are to Vancouver or Seattle.
thanks

Hi,

Me again... I forgot to mention on my other post (to your other thread) that April should be a GREAT time for super value on downtown Vancouver accommodations. (after the Olympics, before tourist season, etc.)

I've been to Alaska in early April (drove there, from Seattle) and found it quite suitable for me... though it was indeed cold much farther north than Anchorage. (no tourists, no mosquitoes, no traffic, mostly clear weather)

I would suggest that, during the typical year, if leaving Ireland on/near April 18, you could do your mentioned Vancouver stop, and then see some of Vancouver Island, and that would put you in Alaska during a timeframe where you would at least be 'comfortable' weather-wise.

When I went in early April, the lakes were all still frozen, and that made for good photography and a 'stillness' of the air which made it seem more isolated.

My best suggestion as to your Alaska trip, is to wing-it and schedule/plan your outdoor activities according to the weather once you arrive.

If you really appreciate the outdoors, there are few places on earth with as much **outdoors** as Alaska. Now it might be snow scenes, and frozen lakes... or it might be the first signs of spring. Be prepared for either, and buy heavy gear upon arrival if needed (prices should be good on that, too, so late in the winter season).

As for which airport destination... I would let the prices dictate which one you opt for... (UNLESS THERE ARE SOME VISA/PASSPORT RELATED ISSUES of which I am not familiar). Be sure to consider car rentals when pricing everything, and the possible expense involved in a one-way rental. OR maybe you fly to Seattle and then FLY, again, to Vancouver.

It sure wouldn't hurt any long-distance traveler to Vancouver to at least have a quick look and appreciation for Seattle (where I live). But again, costs should be the determining factor.

If it fits your schedule, I would highly recommend BC Ferries' Inside Passage route.

We traveled in the reverse direction from your itinerary, but you might get a few ideas from what we did:
